Irene’s Memoirs: Chapter 94

NOVEMBER – 2010 – ST. MARK’S “THE MESSENGER”
LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE
(NOVEMBER-2010) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC The following was written by Michelle Hagenkord who came to THE ROC for over 5 years as a teen and later became an adult volunteer – “When I first saw The ROC, my mom and I stepped in to see what it was all about. At first, when I saw the ROC, I wasn’t sure. My mom said to Pastor Mueller, "just take this kid off my hands." Then, after coming to The ROC for sometime, I was given answers to questions that I had. God wasn’t a big part of my life till I came to The ROC. I started to go to church and to read the BIBLE again. I found that there are many people in the church who care for you. I learned the hard way that God does or allows things for a reason. I used to say to people when they told me about God’s promises, "Oh, ya, really!"– but now I depend on God’s word much more. I still question and doubt but not near as much as I used to. God has been there from the beginning and he will be there till the end. With all that said and done, I would say don’t wait when it comes to God’s Word and your faith in Jesus, your Savior from sin. Talk to a pastor about your faith, your doubts and questions. So, see you soon or in heaven.”
Please continue to support the mission work of THE ROC in any way that you can. Gifts are always greatly appreciated. We still have about $25,000 left to pay for our building and remodeling. Also a couple of items on our wish list are a PlayStation 3 Game system and old pool or ping-pong tournament trophies that could be used for our ROC tournaments. Thanks for your help.
Pastor/Director of the ROC
Timothy Peter Mueller

NOVEMBER 5, 2010 – MATT CONDUCTS THE DEVOTION IN THE CHAPEL AT MLC

Dick and I decided to stop in at the ROC, as we try to do every week, to visit with our son, the teens, and volunteers. Judy Raiser and Tanya Haselou were the volunteers, so we visited with them too. Judy’s son is the one who photographed our families for our happy and blessed 80th birthday celebration on the weekend of Dick’s birthday (September 7, 2009). After talking to Tanya for a while, I found out that her grandmother is married to my cousin, Edward Kuckkan. When we talked to our son, Tim, he told us that his and Sue’s son, Matthew, was going to conduct the devotion at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, that evening. Matt, God willing, will graduate from there in the Spring of 2011, and then attend the Seminary in Mequon to study to be a Pastor, like his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

At 7:00 p.m., Brandon Simmons, a teen who has one leg and a malformed right hand, set up the computer so that MLC was on the screen. And there was Matt dressed in a white gown at the altar of the huge quite new chapel with students and professors waiting to listen to him. The teens, volunteers, Tim, and we also raptly listened to him. There was not a sound in the room except Matt’s voice centering on part of the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy Kingdom Come”. His parts were – 1. What is the Kingdom? 2. How does it come? 3. To whom does it come? We were so proud of our Matt. Afterwards Tim asked the teens questions about Matt’s devotion, and they knew the answers. What a blessing the ROC is to many, some of whom might be roaming the streets in and around Watertown!

MARCH 14, 2010 – CELEBRATING JENNY’S 30TH BIRTHDAY (MARCH 21, 1980

Again we are happily sitting around Sue and Tim’s table – I should say “tables” – because their family is getting bigger, and now two tables are being used. Wow! The dessert is an exquisite dish (a Trifle), sort of Ambrosia (food of the ancient Greek gods) – positively delicious!!!! It was in a huge glass dish on a pedestal, and as I remember, it contained strawberries, whipping cream, etc. Good choice, Jenny! Of course, there were gifts, too, for the birthday girl. We had a great time!

MARCH 16, 2010 – SUE (WEILAND) UNDERGOES “MOHS” SURGERY – BASIL CELL CARCINOMA ON HER INNER RIGHT EYE

If only mothers and fathers could take the place of their children – but all of us must live our own lives. The cell carcinoma was next to Sue’s nose and under her right eye. It hurts me to even think and write about it. We thank God for giving the surgeon the knowledge and equipment to perform the surgery. She needed plastic surgery the next day so that a skin graft (skin from her eyelid – amazing!) could he placed by the surgeon over the hole which was made when he took the tumor out. We thank God, our greatest Physician, for answering our prayers.

MARCH 16, 2010 – OLD ROC BUILDING ON SOUTH WATER STREET IS NO MORE

The lady who lives across the street from the old ROC building has a clear view of the Rock River from her home. There is nothing left of the building, and in its place there is nothing but rubble and men in machines. The land is being cleared to make way for an apartment building which will have four floors. It’s hard to believe that the place which was “home” to so many teens who come from broken homes, poverty, etc. is no more. But, we KNOW that our dear Lord provides. St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church provided a “temporary home” in the basement of its parish hall, and then a building owned by Carew Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. was purchased. Through the generosity of kind people and the hard work of P.T. (our son, Pastor Timothy), teens, and volunteers, the building at 213 North 3rd Street is being remodeled. Yes, as my husband always says, “THE LORD WILL PROVIDE”. For more information about the ROC remodeling, please go back to MOM’S MEMOIRS (MARCH 24, 2010) PAGES 158 AND 159.

MARCH 18, 2010 – A LETTER TO FRIENDS OF THE ROC YOUTH CENTER

“We want to keep you informed how the remodeling process is going at our new building at 213 N. 3rd Street. We are so thankful and overwhelmed by the work already begun and the people who have offered to help. Thanks be to God. If you would like more information about the remodeling, please call our Head Project Chairman, Mr. Bill Schmidt (261-3345). We feel pictures, which we have included with this e-mail, show the progress the best. Please FORWARD this e-mail to all you may feel would like to know about what is happening with THE ROC. Due to a few unforeseen costs like metal studs and extensive wiring, the project may have us run over the final $40,000 needed. However, we are confident we will together give whatever is needed. Thank you so much for your help and support”.

MARCH 20, 2010 – “MALARIA – IT’S NO FUN!”

Our daughter, Stephanie Heitsch, asked that I write about malaria because I had it in Africa. They wanted it to present to their Ladies Guild and church newsletter for a fundraiser for malaria. The article which I wrote and submitted to them is on PAGES 177 AND 178 OF “MOM’S MEMOIRS”.

MARCH 27, 2010 – JESSICA BLUME, BRIAN WEILAND’S FIANCE, HAS SUPRA VENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA

Our daughter, Sue (Weiland) called to let us know that Jessica was going to have an operation for “Supra Ventricular Tachycardia”. They were going to do an oblation and cauterize extra pathways in her heart, but decided after they started the procedure that the operation can wait a few years. They found out that it is more detailed than what they thought. Susie said that they think that Jessica is too young for a pacemaker. Later Jessica wrote a beautiful long letter to us giving all the details of the operation. Thank you so much, Jessica. She is in all of our prayers.

We also want to thank God for holding His protecting hand over BRIAN DURING THE ACCIDENT HE HAD IN MILWAUKEE ON MARCH 7TH. It happened on his way from work. His car was upside down on a busy street. As God would have it, a medical person stopped immediately and took care of him (he did have his seatbelt on). The angels were watching over him and he was not injured.
APRIL – 2010 – “PEBBLES FROM THE ROC”
The opening up of walls for doors and windows, the breaking up of cement to level the floor, the hanging of furnaces, the fixing of water leaks, etc. have all begun in our ROC Youth Center building at 213 N. 3rd St. As you may know from the paper, the city common council and city site plan review committee unanimously approved the building and plans for our youth center. If all goes well, we will be able to open the ROC Youth Center on 3rd St. later in June or early in July. If you would like more information about the remodeling, please call our Head Project Chairman, Mr. Bill Schmidt (261-3345), or if you would like to help, please call our Labor Donations Coordinator, Mr. Don Bartz (261-1319). Mr. Todd Morris (206-0875) is our Furnishings Coordinator who will provide a list of needed items as time goes along. So far a new energy efficient dish washer and refrigerator are needed. Due to a few unforeseen costs like metal studs and extensive wiring, the project may have us run over the final $40,000 needed. However, we are confident we will together raise whatever is needed. As we look to give the final $40,000 and more, your generous and kind gifts (make checks out to THE ROC marked BUILDING FUND) may be sent to 1411 Wedgewood Drive, Watertown, WI 53098. Thanks you so much for your help and support.
APRIL 2, 2010 – TRE ORE SERVICE AT ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN, WATERTOWN, WI.

“THE DAYS OF THE HOLY WEEK” Our son, Tim (Pastor/Director of the ROC) was asked to participate in the TRE ORE (three hour) service at St. John’s. There were six other pastors participating – each preaching on one day of the holy week. Tim preached his sermon on what happened on Thursday. His sermon was based on John 18:1-11, Luke 22:47,48 – “The Betrayal of the Offender”. Kevin Poston, Sue and Tim’s son-in-law (married to Jenny) directed the Kinderchor and the Mixed Choir.

When we think we are suffering in this world, we think of Jesus, who suffered – and died – for us.

APRIL 4, 2010 – CELEBRATING EASTER WITH DEBBIE, GLEN, AND FAMILY

We were invited by Debbie and Glen to attend the Easter service with them to hear Pastor Bruce Margraf (who was a boy in the Petaluma, California, church when they were married) at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sussex, Wisconsin, where they are members. The sermon was based on 1 Peter1:3-9. We were pleased to attend Faith, and also pleased to be invited to their home in Colgate, Wisconsin, and visit with everyone. It was great to see how much little Aubrey, Jamie and Mark’s baby born December 1, 2009, has grown. We also enjoyed all the delectable food! And Cassie and Caleb are growing up! Caleb gave us his school website. It is – lovingshepherdschool.com. The password is: godofgracesalvation0910. Thank you so very much, Caleb!

APRIL 5, 2010 – U.S. CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVE TOM PETRI COMES TO WATERTOWN

House of Representatives Tom Petri fielded questions from constituents during a town hall meeting held at the Watertown Senior and Community Center. Dick and I decided to go to the meeting which was about the health care reform bill which had recently been signed by President Barack Obama. Many concerned upset citizens asked questions which the Representative answered. I had my camera with me and took pictures of Rep. Petri, and someone took a picture of both Dick and me standing with him. He seems like a very patient man, but looked “tired”.

APRIL 7, 2010 – ELAINE WILSON CALLED HOME TO HEAVEN

0N PAGE 173 OF “MOM’S MEMOIRS” I HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN ABOUT GLEN’S MOM’S SOUL BEING BEING CARRIED BY THE ANGELS TO HEAVEN. Her funeral was on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Harder Funeral Home, Brookfield, Wisconsin. Pastor David Seeger conducted the service. The sermon was based on 1 John 4:9 – “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live through him.” After the service, all of us went to Maxim’s restaurant at 18025 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Elaine’s children, Glen, Dale, Julie (wife of Dr. Marvin Braun, Gregory, South Dakota), and Roger went to Petaluma, California, where the committal service was held. Elaine was buried next to her husband at Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma.

APRIL 15, 2010 – A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT THE FIRESIDE, FT. ATKINSON, WI. IN HONOR OF MY BIRTHDAY (APRIL 17, 1930), AND A NOT-TO-BE FORGOTTEN FEBRUARY 14, 2008 (VALENTINE’S DAY) CELEBRATION AT THE FIRESIDE

Our Christmas gift from Sue, Tim, and family in the year 2009 were tickets to enjoy dinner and a show at the Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson . We were so elated! There were six shows to choose from. We chose “JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT” (ALBUM #86). We enjoyed the fabulous dinner and show so much! Sue, Tim, and Joanne and Jerry Brandt went with us. There is a wonderful gift shop. I chose a cute ceramic cupcake with the words “Happy Birthday” on the front and five candles (each candle stands for 16 years) on the top to remind us of the great time we had together.

A NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN 2007 CHRISTMAS GIFT (ALBUM #74) from Sue, Tim, and family were tickets to the Fireside Theater for dinner and a show. We ate the fabulous dinner first, and then went to see BEST OF THE BANDS which we enjoyed very much. Sue and Tim were with us. We chose two hearts in the gift shop to hang on the wall above our “Gone With The Wind” plates. The red one says – “love is forever”, and the purple one – “love is all you need”. What a wonderful memory they evoke! Thank you, Tim, Sue, and family.

APRIL 17, 2010 – MY 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

ON PAGES 178, 179 AND 180 OF MOM’S MEMOIRS I HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THE BLESSED AND HAPPY TIME WE HAD ON MY BIRTHDAY. IT WAS UNFORGETTABLE! THANK YOU, FAMILIES!

APRIL 17, 2010 – “PEBBLES FROM THE ROC”

ON PAGES 182 AND 183 OF MOM’S MEMOIRS YOU WILL READ AN ARTICLE WHICH TIM WROTE ABOUT THE TEENS VIEWING THE MOVIE “THE PASSION OF CHRIST”, AND ALSO ABOUT THE REMODELING BEING DONE AT THE FUTURE “HOME” OF THE ROC. “THE LORD PROVIDES”

APRIL 21, 2010 – JANICE CHMIELEWSKI’S SOUL WAS CARRIED TO HEAVEN. HER FUNERAL WAS APRIL 25, 2010. PLEASE GO BACK TO PAGE 173 WHERE I HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT JANICE’S PASSING. SHE WAS THE LOVING MOTHER OF DAVID, NICKI’S HUSBAND. AND ALSO SHE AND HER TWIN SISTER, JOYCE, WERE MY FIRST GRADE PUPILS AT TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN FREISTADT, WI.

APRIL 24, 2010 – OUR SON, TIM’S, 52ND BIRTHDAY

APRIL 25, 2010 – OUR SON, STEVE’S 43RD BIRTHDAY

Tim’s 52nd birthday is April 24th, but their family was not able to all be together then until Sunday, the 25th. We were not able to be there then because that was the day of Janice Chmielewski’s funeral. So I baked and decorated an angel food cake for him, and we took it over to Sue and his home. Some of their family was there, and when they saw that cake, they wanted to eat it right away! We sang “Happy Birthday” to him, and he blew out the candles. Everyone loved that cake!

We celebrated Steve’s 43rd birthday with him in May, 2010, at Pioneer Park since he celebrated his actual birthday with Melody’s family.

It seems hard to believe that Tim, born in Northern Rhodesia, Africa, is 52 years old, and that Steve, born in Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia before Independence in 1964), Africa, are 52 and 43 years old. Where has all the time gone? We can tell how fast the time has gone by looking at how fast our latest great-grandchildren, Addie, Tyler, and Aubrey have grown! And all of them are so cute! We are richly blessed!

APRIL 24, 2010 – ROC REMODELING

Dick and I stopped at the ROC on North 3rd Street to see how the remodeling is going. It is going great! We were amazed to see how many teens are helping “PT”, volunteers, and friends. The Lord is blessing richly.

APRIL 26 – MAY 11, 2010 – HELEN KELLBERG GOES ON A CRUISE TO HAWAII

Helen, as you all know, is Dick’s sister. She and her family live in the state of Washington. She lives in Renton. Her husband, dear Carl, was carried by the angels to heaven September 14, 2006. She decided to go on a cruise with some friends to Hawaii. We received a card May 8th of the enchanting Rainbow Falls (Hilo, Hawaii) which was once home to Hina, the goddess of rain. It says: “Hi, Here I am in Hawaii. It is warm and humid. The flowers are beautiful. Everything is so lush and green. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Honolulu. The ship had flu symptoms, and I didn’t get it until the day we were in Honolulu. Today a train ride into the country. Love, Helen”

MAY 9, 2010 – MOTHER’S DAY – FIVE MOTHERS ATTENDED

The food was terrific! It was prepared by the husbands of the mothers. The mothers were Sue, Joanne Brandt, Jenny Poston, Julie Pasch, and me. There were even gifts given! What a treat! Thanks, guys!

I also received cards, phone calls, and gifts from other members of our family. Brandon Simmons, one of the ROC teens gave a card to me. Brandon has one wooden leg and a malformed right hand. And still he wrote beautiful words on the card to me. Brandon figures out how best to use the gifts which God has given him. I treasure that card as well as all the other ones I got from our loved ones. Thank you all for thinking of me.

MAY 11, 2010 – A VISIT FROM DEBBIE AND AUBREY

Our Debbie came to visit us, bringing along Jamie and Mark’s little baby, Aubrey. Debbie babysits Aubrey some days when her parents are working. We were so happy to see them. We got Dick’s (my husband) wooden eighty-year-old high chair out of the corner in the living room so that Aubrey could sit in it. We took Debbie and Aubrey to the place where the ROC building is being remodeled. We met Debbie’s brother, Tim, there. Two men were attaching a long shelf against a beautifully newly painted green wall. Another man was laying the tile in part of the building. Debbie was very impressed. The Lord is surely with everyone to make the ROC an awesome place for the teens.

MAY 15, 2010 – OUR GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER CASSANDRA NICOLE CHMIELEWSKI IS 12 YEARS OLD

Yes, the time flies by. Cassie is now 12 years old. It seems like only yesterday when she was born. She is our oldest great-granddaughter. She was baptized in Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hustisford, Wisconsin. There were five generations present at her Baptism – my mother, Frances Kuckkan (great- great-grandmother), me, Irene Mueller (great-grandmother), Debbie Wilson (grandmother), Nicole Chmielewski (mother), and Cassie (baby). How blessed we are!

MAY 14, 15, 2010 – WATERTOWN RUMMAGE SALE DAY – AND CELEBRATING CONNER POSTON’S THIRD BIRTHDAY (BORN JUNE 1, 2007) ON SAME DAY

Watertown had its annual rummage sale on Friday, the 14th, and Saturday, the 15th. Of course, the Mueller, Poston, and Pasch families had one too. Everyone brought their “stuff” to Sue and Tim’s home. They live at 1411 Wedgewood Drive which is in a great area to have a garage sale. Many of the neighbors had garage sales too. It’s a lot of fun, visiting with one another and with the people who come. I have been going to garage sales for years in Crystal Lake, Illinois, Waunakee, Wisconsin, and Weslaco, Texas, while Dick was still in the full-time ministry and busy with working on bulletins and sermons on the weekends. Also, I have had garage sales along with relatives and friends. It’s an added bonus when people come and buy your stuff. There is a saying – “your junk is someone else’s treasure”. Years ago the men didn’t think much of garage sales, but these days they happily join in and even have their own.

Of course, we celebrated Conner’s 3rd birthday There was great food and a delicious beautifully decorated cake made by his Mom, Jenny. Everyone had a great time, especially because the weather was so wonderful too.

MAY – 2010 STEVE COMES TO PIONEER PARK TO CELEBRATE HIS 43RD BIRTHDAY (BORN APRIL 25, 1967) WITH US – ALSO HE, TIM, AND SONS HELP OPEN OUR TRAILER

Our youngest son is 43 years old. How did that happen? We celebrated his birthday with us at Pioneer Park. We gave him a gift of a copper decorated bird feeder with bird seed. We were so happy to be with him. The guys put the canvas up which covers part of the deck. Megan and Timmy pitched their cute red and white tent on our lawn because Sue and Tim’s trailer was full of people. Their family is growing!

MAY 16, 2010 – TIM LECTURES THE “OWLS” ABOUT THE ROC

Tim was asked by the OWLS, an organization of St. Mark’s to which we belong, to lecture about the ROC. He told them about how the ROC was forced to move from 321 S. Water Street to make way for a four-floor apartment building to St. Mark’s parish basement temporarily. Then he told them about the building at 213 North Third Street which has been bought and is being remodeled. He emphasized how greatly our dear Lord has blessed the ROC. Everyone was very interested and asked a lot of questions.

MAY 22. 29 – 2010 – SAMI JO HEITSCH’S 18TH BIRTHDAY AND GRADUATION

We were very sorry that we could not go to Cheyenne, Wyoming, for Sami Jo’s birthday or her graduation from Cheyenne East High School. The reason is because Travis, her brother, and Jenna plan to be married on June 12th, and we do plan to be there for that, and celebrate Sami Jo’s birthday and graduation then. Sami Jo’s class motto was: “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.”

Sami Jo is in our thoughts and prayers on these momentous occasions in her life.

JUNE 7, 2010 – THE DEATH OF OUR NEIGHBOR, DALE NOLTE

Dick and I had been with our family at Pioneer Park, Lake Delton, so when I saw in the Watertown Daily Times that Dale Nolte, our neighbor, had been in the Watertown hospital, I called. His wife, Rita, was working, but he told me that he “had a twisted bowel” and had to have an operation. I said, “I’ve never heard of that”, and he said that he hadn’t either. Just a couple of days later, we heard that he had to have another operation and had died. His death was very sudden.

The Noltes lived on the other end of our 3-unit condo. The Watertown Daily Times said that Mr. Nolte “moved on in the circle of life”. What that means we don’t know, but Kathy Maciel, our neighbor across the street, who is part American Indian, said that that is what the Indians believe. We do know that their home is full of Indian pictures, figures, etc. The obituary said that “he was an ordained elder of the Presbyterian Church USA and a Mason in the Oconomowoc/Hartland chapter.” The day he died it rained and there was a beautiful rainbow in the sky. We let God be his judge. Psalm 31:15 – “My times are in your hands.”

We were not able to attend the “memorial” for him which was in their home. We were on our way to Wyoming to attend the wedding of Jenna Robbins and our grandson, Travis Heitsch, June 12, 2010.

JUNE 12, 2010 – THE GRADUATION OF JOHN CHRISTIAN ANDERSON

We received an invitation from John Christian, the son of Carla and Pete Anderson, to his graduation from Kentridge High School at the Ware Center. Carla is the daughter of Dick’s sister, Helen, and Carl Kellberg. Enclosed was a very handsome picture of John. How we wish we were able to attend, but as I mentioned above, that is the day of Jenna and Travis’s wedding. Thank you for the invitation, John.

SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 2010 – THE MOVING OF THE ROC TO 213 NORTH 3RD STREET

This was the day on which Jenna Robbins and Travis Heitsch were married, so we were in Fort Collins, Colorado. We could not be there for the moving of the ROC, but we know that our son, Tim, Pastor/Director of the ROC, had many teens, volunteers, relatives, and friends to help – thanks be to God!

PLEASE REFER BACK TO PAGE 183 OF MOM’S MEMOIRS FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE MOVING. WE DO LOOK FORWARD TO THE GRAND OPENING ON JUNE 26TH

JUNE 12, 2010 – THE WEDDING OF JENNA ROBBINS AND TRAVIS HEITSCH. PLEASE REFER BACK TO PAGES 184 AND 185. ANOTHER BLESSING IS ADDED TO OUR FAMILY

WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM TO BRING YOU SOME GREAT NEWS!!!!!
JANUARY – 2011 – ST. MARK’S MESSENGER – “PEBBLES FROM THE ROC”
LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE
(JANUARY-2011) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC A teen from THE ROC was out hunting with his father on opening day. He went to find his father to go in for lunch only to find his dad dead from a heart attack at age 52. That teen, on the same day, was at THE ROC when it opened at 3:00 p.m., still dressed in all his hunting clothes, because he knew he could find comfort from God’s Word at THE ROC. What a blessing it was to share Christ with him!
We transported twenty-five teens from THE ROC to our Live Nativity at St. Luke’s. What a blessing to have so many unchurched teens hear about their Savior in such a unique way.
Every day we give thanks for the newly remodeled building we now call home at 213 N. 3rd Street. Approximately $23,000 is left to pay on Building/Remodeling project. (Since the publishing of the Pebbles From The ROC, a couple stopped in and, to our joy and surprise, wrote out a $10,000 check for the Building Project). Together we hope we will be able to reach this amount soon. Thanks for your help! Also, volunteers are always appreciated at THE ROC. Stop in and talk to Pastor Mueller to see if it is something for you.

AND NOW BACK TO THE PAST

JUNE 29, 2010 – CASSIE CHMIELEWSKI, OUR OLDEST GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER, ATTENDS “LUTHER PREP BASKETBALL CAMP” AND PLAYS AT ST. MARK’S

Debbie told us that our great-granddaughter, Cassie, was going to attend Luther Prep basketball camp and play at St. Mark’s Lutheran School. We went there and took a couple pictures of her in the gym. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that Dick’s and my oldest great-granddaughter would be playing basketball in the very same spot (St. Mark’s did not have a gym) where her great-grandmother, me, played baseball when I was attending St. Mark’s parochial school so many years ago! Miracles do happen!

Cassie is the only great grandchild – so far- who has an e-mail address. It is: brewcitycassie15@gmail.com She is 12 years old –     

Dick said to me the other day, “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would be corresponding via e-mail with a great-granddaughter some day”. We thank God for this wonderful blessing!

BACK TO THE PAST – JUNE 29, 2010 – CHRISTINA WEILAND GRADUATES – CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Dick wrote a letter to Christina on this date congratulating her as she graduated from the Health Touch Spa and School of Massage Therapy. He also wrote that we pray that the occasion was all she hoped it would be. I’ll never forget the wonderful message she gave me when all our families were gathered at Riverside Park in Watertown. It was the last day (Sunday, September 6, 2009) we were with all of them after the surprise 80th birthdays celebration they surprised us with. It was one surprise after another all of that blessed weekend.

JULY 8, 2010 – A MOST WELCOME LETTER AND PICTURES FROM MY SISTER, LOTTY – DOLORIS FRANCES (KUCKKAN) FUNAIR

Lotty lives in Cathedral City, California. It is next to Palm Springs which is in the desert. Her husband, Artie Funair, who worked for Frank Sinatra, died on October 2, 2006. Lottie is a realtor and loves living in the desert where it is nice and warm. She sent two cute pictures of herself holding her little dog in her home.

JULY 21, 24, 25, 2010 – FROM ST. MARK’S CHURCH BULLETIN – “THANKS BE TO GOD”

We are very thankful for the gifts given at the Grand Opening to the ROC Building/Remodeling Fund which came to $1,123.00. Our goal is to pay off the building and remodeling by the end of the year. We only have $30,000 of the total amount of $165,000 remaining.
Thanks also for all the help as $1,334.00 was raised through the Pick N’ Save Brat Stand, $8,646.00 (after matching) through the Golf Outing and $375.35 from teens working hard as the trash detail at the Tractor Pull. The next time you will see the teens at work will be at Glenn’s Brat Stand on Friday and Saturday, August 27th and 28th, 10:00-3:00 both days. Any adults who would like to help are asked to call (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mail (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net) Pastor/Director Mueller. Please plan to stop by for lunch at the Brat Stand. Thank you.

Wow! When it rains, it pours – with blessings, that is. Jonah Timothy Poston’s 5th birthday was July 22, 2010, Adalynn Susan Pasch’s 1st birthday is August 1, 2010, and Tyler Matthew Poston’s 1st birthday is August 20, 2010. All the birthdays were celebrated in one day. Each child had her/his own special birthday cake. Addie had cake all over her face. Tyler did a little better. And Jonah, well, he’s too old to get himself all messed up. We had a lot of fun!

AUGUST 27, 2010 – GLENN’S BRAT STAND

Dick and I went to Glenn’s Brat Stand on West Main Street in Watertown to enjoy brats which the teens, volunteers, and our son, Tim, grill and serve to anyone who comes. They also serve hamburgers. Everything is delicious and many people come. Besides the good food, we visit with friends and relatives sitting at one of the picnic tables. All funds raised are for the ROC.

SEPTEMBER 3-6, 2010 – BIG LABOR DAY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

Wow! A bunch of birthdays were celebrated at Pioneer Park in Lake Delton. The birthdays celebrated were: Megan (August 25), Grandpa Mueller (September 7), Chris (September 15), Tim (September 19), and Sue (September 28). The big celebration was held at Sue and Tim’s with all of us sitting around the fire on the big circular deck which our Tim had built after they bought their lot at Pioneer Park. Of course, all of Sue and Tim’s children (now grown up) and spouses came. Our great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler (Jenny and Kevin’s children), and Addie (Julie and Tom’s little girl) were all there too. We are so richly blessed!!!! Our daughter, Sue (Weiland), granddaughter, Laura, and friend, Leah, came from Merrill, WI. to join us. Sue’s (Mueller) parents, Jerry and Joanne Brandt also came. Of course, gifts were given to the birthday women and men – among them were some quite tall avocado trees which I had grown from avocado seeds. All of us had a great time together, and are thankful that our loving God has kept us all safe for another year.

Timmy set up a great artistic wooden swing on top of a mound on one corner of Sue and Tim’s lot, so we have some lovey-dovey pictures of Sue and Tim sitting in it.

On September 6th our grandchildren and great-grandchildren honored Dick and me by taking us out to breakfast at Uno’s in Lake Delton, Wisconsin. It was a perfect ending to a perfect weekend. Thank you, everyone!!!!!

SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 – CELEBRATING SUE’S (MUELLER) BIRTHDAY (SEPTEMBER 28)

We were invited by Jenny (Poston), Sue and Tim’s oldest daughter, to come to the Poston home to celebrate Sue’s 53rd birthday. In her invitation Jenny said, “even though we kind of celebrated hers with all the others at Pioneer Park, she did most of the work and it wasn’t really a stress free party for her, so I’d like to have a party at my house this Sunday for lunch – around noon. I will make seafood alfredo and whatever dessert Mom wants.” Of course, each family brought something to add to what amounted to a great delicious meal which all of us enjoyed.

Of course, the whole Mueller family was there – also Joanne and Jerry Brandt, and us. Oh, there is an addition. Chris brought a very pretty blond girl friend named “Rebecca Faugstad”. She was introduced to Chris by both Julie and Megan. Julie worked with her at Martin Luther Child Care Center in Stoughton, Wisconsin (where Julie still works, and where Julie, Tom, and Addie live), and Megan went to school with her at Bethany College in Mankato, Minnesota. Welcome, Becca (as they call her)!

OCTOBER 5, 11, 12 – 2010 – “THE EAGLE MESSAGE” (3 COPIES) SPARTA, WISCONSIN

Our grandson (son of Sue and Tim Mueller), Timothy Peter, Jr., is Principal/Teacher at St. John’s Lutheran School in Sparta, Wisconsin. He is a very dedicated, sincere, Principal and Teacher (“Timmy” teaches 8th grade). “The Eagle Message” gives much information to students, parents, teachers, etc. about what is happening at St. John’s Lutheran School. To read all about it, please refer to Album Number 89.

OCTOBER 10, 2010 – CELEBRATION OF PASTOR JIM WEILAND’S (OUR SON-IN-LAW) 25TH YEAR IN THE MINISTRY. THE SERVICE WAS HELD AT ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, HAMBURG, WISCONSIN. PLEASE REFER TO PAGE 219 OF “MOM’S MEMOIRS” AND ALBUM NUMBER 90. WHAT A BLESSED OCCASION IT WAS!

OCTOBER 13, 16, 17 – 2010 – ST. MARK’S BULLETIN – “A COMMISSIONING SERVICE FOR BILL MEIER, the new National Executive Director of WELS Kingdom Workers, will be held October 24 in the 9 AM service. A reception will follow in the Parish Center. Bill and his wife, Cathy, and children, Elise, Marie, and Audrey, are members of St. Mark’s and live in Watertown”.

PLEASE REFER TO PAGE 172, FEBRUARY 12, 2008, OF MOM’S MEMOIRS – MEETING MISSIONARIES TO MOZAMBIQUE, AFRICA. There you will read about our visit with the Meier family and Enderle families before they left the United States. They were sent to Portugal first to learn Portuguese before leaving for Mozambique. However, they were recalled back to the U.S. because of a shortage of funds by the Wisconsin Synod. It was a very big disappointment. We thank our loving God for taking care of all of them, and that Bill Meier will be commissioned to be the new Director of the Kingdom Workers. They are now members of St. Mark’s church, so we see them quite often. They now live at 613 South 12th Street, Watertown, Wisconsin 53094

OCTOBER 20, 2010 – INVITATION TO SEE JOSH AND JONAH’S CLASSROOMS

Jenny (Poston) invited us to St. John’s Lutheran School in Watertown to see Josh and Jonah, Jenny and Kevin’s sons, at work in their classrooms. Josh’s teacher’s name is “Jeanne Fischer” and Jonah’s teacher’s name is “Julie Picchiottino”. Jonah’s teacher had asked the pupils to draw something “real” and then something “pretend”. Jonah drew a “cheeseburger” for real, and a “catburger” for pretend. How about that? We thought it was quite ingenious! We went to Josh’s classroom, too, and saw him in action. The teacher was teaching the pupils Spanish. After our visits to the classrooms, we were invited to the cafeteria where we had a delicious lunch. What a blessing it is for Dick and me to visit our GREAT-grandsons’ classrooms!

OCTOBER 23, 2010 – STEVE COMES TO VISIT US

Our son, Steve, came to visit us and took us out to Applebees to eat. We had a wonderful visit with him. I don’t remember what we ate, but I do know that we love the 7 oz. steak dinner, so that’s probably what we had. Thank you, Steve, for coming. There’s always a hole in our hearts when our children come and then have to leave again. They are all grownups now and have their own responsibilities.

OCTOBER 27, 2010 – DEBBIE AND AUBREY COME TO VISIT US ON DEBBIE’S BIRTHDAY

Our daughter, Debbie, and Aubrey Wilson (Jamie and Mark’s baby) came to visit, so out came Dick’s high chair (over 80 years old) from the corner in our living room for Aubrey to sit in. Of course, we had a Black Forest birthday cake with the numbers 5 and 6 on it. It’s hard to believe she is 56 years old – she doesn’t look it. Debbie’s brother, Tim, dropped in and had a piece of cake with us. All of us sang “Happy Birthday and God’s Blessings” to Debbie and then she blew out the candles. Again, we had a hole in our hearts when she and little Aubrey left.

OCTOBER 29, 2010 – CELEBRATION OF JULIA PASCH’S BIRTHDAY (OCTOBER 30, 1986)

Ah, there is the old familiar never–wear-out balloon Mueller family tablecloth! Again, we had a great birthday party with everyone. Dick and I are so thankful that we have loving and happy families. All of us know that we are God’s children and try to do what He asks of us. As is recorded in the Bible in Psalm 68:3 – “But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.” And in Proverbs 15:13: “A happy heart makes the face cheerful.”

OCTOBER 30, 2010 – A WALK ON TIVOLI ISLAND

Dick and I decided to go for a walk on Tivoli Island. It is surrounded by the waters of the Rock River and is located near the bridge on East Main Street. The ROC teens and our son Tim (Pastor/Director of the ROC) had helped the Izaak Walton League, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected conservation organizations, spread wood chips along paths on the island so people could take walks, go fishing, watch birds, etc. there. We saw what they did, and enjoyed the fruits of their labors (Jerry Brandt, Tim’s wife, Sue’s father, is a member of the League and also helped). It had been awhile since we were on the Island. “Ma” and “Pa” had told my brother, sisters, and me when we were kids that there had been a pavilion there where there were dances. We saw part of a foundation which was left. As we walked we met two men. I asked them if they had ever seen a fountain which I had read about. One of them took us to where it had been. And there was still water gushing (from a spring probably) from a rusty old pipe along one of the paths. How very interesting! There still is an old-time bridge leading to Tivoli Island from Tivoli Drive which connects to East Main Street.

An interesting note: Henry (my father’s name) Street from Concord Avenue goes down into Tivoli Drive, and Irene (my name) Street is a one-block Street off of Henry Street to East Main Street.

OCTOBER 31, 2010 – REFORMATION SUNDAY AT ST. JOHN’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

We attended the Reformation service at St. John’s. The sermon theme was: “Luther taught New Testament Truths”. The Liturgist/Preacher was Pastor John Boeringer, and the organist was Kevin Poston, our granddaughter, Jenny’s, husband. Kevin is a very good organist. He also teaches 3rd grade at St. John’s School.

NOVEMBER – 2010 – “PEBBLES FROM THE ROC” FROM THE ST. MARK’S MESSENGER

The following was written by Michelle Hagenkord who came to THE ROC for over 5 years as a teen and later became an adult volunteer – “When I first saw The ROC, my mom and I stepped in to see what it was all about. I used to say to people when they told me about God’s promises, "Oh, ya, really!" but now I depend on God’s word much more.
Also a couple of items on our wish list are a PlayStation 3 Game system and old pool or ping pong tournament trophies that could be used for our ROC tournaments. Thanks for your help.

NOVEMBER – 2010 – NEWS FROM CHRIST LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EAGLE RIVER, WI.

The very interesting newsletter is written by teachers of Christ Lutheran, one of whom is our grandson, Chris Mueller (Principal/Teacher). The headings of the articles are: Veterans Day Program, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Reformation, Grandparents Day, Upper, Middle, Lower, and Kindergarten News. All of the articles are centered on “bringing the children up in the training and instruction of the Lord”. The newsletter is located in Album Number 90 of “Mom’s Memoirs”.

NOVEMBER – 2010 – MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE – “IN FOCUS”

Dick made the news inside the November issue of the Martin Luther College (New Ulm), Minnesota, “IN FOCUS”. Quite a few people saw his Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, 1951 graduation picture (very handsome) with the caption – “Richard Mueller, NWC ’51, Jefferson, WI.” beneath it. It was quite a nice surprise for all of us.

MR. WALLY BENDER, A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN

Mr. Bender was a member of Lord And Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake, Illinois, when Dick was Pastor there (1975-1986). He was our postman and was very “mixed up” when he started talking to Dick. Dick instructed him, and he, his wife, son, Peter, and daughter, Heide, became members. Dick corresponds with him via e-mail, comforts him and uplifts him. Mr. Bender had his leg amputated some years ago because of Diabetes. He lives in California now and writes very Bible-based letters back to Dick. We thank God for his love and faithfulness to his Savior.

NOVEMBER 6, 2010 – HERITAGE HOMES HELD A GRAND OPENING CEREMONY FOR AN ASSISTED LIVING & COMMUNITY CARE FACILITY – DEDICATION WORSHIP SERVICE – 10:30 a.m.

The guest speaker was Rev. Herbert H. Prahl, President of the Western Wisconsin District – Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. “Little Herbie” was my first grade student when I taught school at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School after we were married and Dick was attending the Seminary in Thiensville (now Mequon), Wisconsin. When we sat down, he spotted us and immediately came over to greet and visit with us. What a thrill it was, and even more of a thrill to hear him preach a wonderful sermon. The ribbon cutting was at 11:45 a.m. and the Open House from noon to 3:00 p.m.

We saw quite a few people we know there who live at Heritage Homes, which is connected to the Assisted Living & Community Care Facility. One of them was Marian Thomsen, wife of Duane Thomsen, who was very active at the ROC playing checkers with the teens. Duane had already gone to his heavenly home. Marian invited us to her apartment to visit with her. She was not too well, and was on oxygen, but we had a nice visit with her and Dick had a prayer with her. She was one of my schoolmates at St. Mark’s Parochial School many years ago. Sadly, Marian was called to her heavenly home December 29, 2010.

NOVEMBER 11, 2010 – AN E-MAIL FROM STEPH – DUI VIDEO

“This is why I do what I do!

This needs to be passed around to every human being who has the keys to a vehicle and the capability of driving while under the influence with impaired judgment and the possibility of causing a life changing incident to happen to everyone he or she comes in contact with while in this condition.

This is perhaps one of the most intense commercials that I’ve ever seen, and it’s well made. I hope that by passing this along to others, that it will make a difference, and if just one life is saved, it will all be worth the effort to simply hit “send” and maybe save a life today or tomorrow or in the future. I think that Australia should be complimented on having the guts to “tell it like it is” and get this campaign out to all of its licensed drivers and to air it on TV – it is very moving and very lifelike, so it has a very strong impact.

Thank you very much, Steph, for your e-mail! Dad and I commend you for what you do! God bless you! With God’s help, we KNOW you have saved many precious lives.

A LETTER FOR ALL OF YOU – FOUND ON THE INTERNET BY DICK

Hello God, I called tonight
To talk a little while.
I need a friend who’ll listen
To my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can’t quite make it
Through a day just on my own…
I need your love to guide me,
So I’ll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep
My family safe and sound.
Come and fill their lives with confidence
For whatever lot they’re bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face
Each hour throughout the day,
And not to worry over things
I can’t change in any way.

I thank you God, for being home
And listening to my call,
For giving me such good advice
When I stumble and fall.

Your number, God, is the only one
That answers every time.
I never get a busy signal,
Never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God, for listening
To my troubles and my sorrow.
Good night, God, I love You, too,
And I’ll call again tomorrow!

P.S. Please bless all my friends and family too.

“LOVE DOES NO WRONG TO A NEIGHBOR; THEREFORE LOVE
IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW.” – ROMANS 13:10

NOVEMBER 13, 2010 – “A LITTLE EXCITEMENT” FOR JENNY

Our granddaughter, Jenny Poston, ran in a 5 mile race called “Miles of Hope For Moms Who Mourn” – for Moms who have lost babies and the people who know them. Jenny wrote, “I’m pretty excited because despite the weather, I ran it in 55 min., 19 sec. for a 3rd place female finish! Good thing, too, because it started pouring right as I crossed the finish line. Props to my awesome hubby and kids who braved the cold weather to cheer me on. Thought you’d all like to share in my little excitement for the week!” Good for you, Jenny!

NOVEMBER 16, 2010 – JOSHUA POSTON’S VIOLIN SOLO RECITAL

We were invited by Jenny and Kevin, Joshua’s parents, to attend a Solo Recital at Maranatha College here in Watertown where their 7-year old son, Joshua, takes violin lessons. We sure didn’t want to pass that up, so along with Jenny, Kevin, Joshua’s three brothers (Jonah, Conner, and Tyler), Joshua’s grandparents (Colleen and Bill Poston and Sue and Tim Mueller), and great-grandparents (Irene and Richard Mueller and Joanne and Jerry Brandt), we heard and saw Joshua stand up there all by himself and play the violin. The title of his solo was “Twinkle Variation” – S. Suzuki. We were absolutely enthralled! You are very brave, Joshua, and we are very proud of you! Never in my wildest dreams when I was growing up here in Watertown did I ever think I would be watching and hearing my 7-year old GREAT-grandson play the violin. I am richly blessed!!!!!

NOVEMBER 21, 2010 – TIM, THE GREAT “AFRICAN WHITE HUNTER”, SHOOTS A HUGE DOE

Jenny, Kevin, their four boys, and we were at Sue and Tim’s home when Tim brought home a huge deer he had shot in Isaac Walton woods. It had to weigh around 200 pounds. He was all alone when he shot it, and had to drag it through thorny bushes around 500 yards to his van – UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! He had his little video camera with him and took pictures as he went along, with huffing and puffing sound effects. But the sound effects were real! He said he also shot a big 8 point buck, but he couldn’t find it. He thinks he shot it in the leg, and tracked the blood through the bush, but then there was no blood. What happened to it he doesn’t know. Timmy and Chris also shot some deer, so there is plenty of venison in all those freezers. Tim has taught his sons how to skin, gut, cut up, and wrap the meat. The Lord provides!!!!!

NOVEMBER 23, 2010 – AT AUGIE’S CHEF’S TABLE WITH JENNY AND TIM

Dick had reserved the four places at Augie’s chef’s table via computer, so the ones who were able to be with us were Jenny and Tim (Sue had to work at Harry &David). When the people came into the basement room in the Watertown City Hall, we were met by Rosie Raatz and Karen Zuberbier who put our names into a basket for a drawing. The names were drawn, and guess what – Tim won a luscious caramel apple pie, Dick won a Perkins dinner certificate, and I won a jar of Augie’s ground ginger. After the drawing, we sat at the chef’s table to watch Augie cook our dinner. He cooked Greek Turkey Breast With Pine Nut and Chestnut Stuffing, Apricot And Pecan Roasted Sweet Potatoes, and Sautéed Green Beans With Smokey Bacon Vinaigrette. After he cooked everything, he put it on four plates, and we got to eat the food which was very good. The people in the audience were all served by Augie’s wife, Kim, the same kind of food on paper dessert plates (ours was served on dinner plates which were not paper).

All of us enjoyed our dinner, and gave thanks to our loving God because there is no charge for anything Augie and Kim do. The show is on TV, but sadly, we cannot get it because we do not get channel 985 on our TV. But, we do enjoy going to Augie’s Elite Cuisine cooking show and try to attend it every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. It’s a lot of fun, and we have made a lot of friends.

NOVEMBER 24, 25, 2010 – CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING AT ST. MARK’S AND AT DEBBIE AND GLEN’S HOME

We attended the Thanksgiving service the night before Thanksgiving Day. Pastor Karl Walther conducted the service which was very well attended. Tim brought about 15 ROC teens with whom we sat. The sermon text was based on Philippians 4:4-7 – “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice, Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The sermon parts were: l. Anxiety, and the antidote is prayer. 2. Complaining, and the antidote is give thanks. 3. War, and the antidote is peace. The ending is “talk to people with gentleness – let it be evident to all.” Many of Sue and Tim’s family who had already arrived also attended the service.
Dick and I were invited to Debbie and Glen’s home on Thanksgiving Day. The weather was better than the weather man had predicted. We were so happy to be with our oldest daughter, her husband, and family. Nicki, David, Cassie, Caleb, Mark, Jamie, Aubrey, Ken, and Joe. But, when we looked for our cameras, they were not in the car. We had forgotten them in the garage when we went back into the house to get something. I was somewhat agitated, but delegated Cassie to take pictures for me. She has a whatchamacallit which is a combination of a telephone and a camera (Dick just told me that Joe told him that it is called a Blackberry, and it does all kinds of other things too). Cassie said her Dad would put the pictures on the computer, and then Dick will have them printed for me – amazing!

Debbie’s oven had gone out, but she and the rest of the family managed to put together a great meal. They had turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, Glen’s special delicious sweet potatoes, corn, broccoli, salad, buns, etc., and three kinds of pies: apple, cherry, and pumpkin. Everything was mouth-watering, and we indulged more than we should have. How thankful we all should be in this great country called America. We, who have been in Africa KNOW!!!! We are all richly blessed, and we thank God for His gracious loving kindness to all of us.

Caleb, with his sweet smile and one dimple on his right cheek (just like our Dick in Orlando), will be eight years old on December 12th. While we were at Debbie and Glen’s home, he sat down at the computer and made a “Special Thanksgiving” card for us. On the front is a picture of a horn of plenty basket filled with pumpkins, gourds, corn, etc., and inside on the left is a picture of Charlie Brown, Woodstock, and Snoopy in a baker’s hat carrying a huge turkey on a platter. And on the right of the card Caleb writes to us: “Dear Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa, I just wanted to say, Have a excellent Thanksgiving. That’s all. Well Bye-bye Grandma and Grandpa.” (Then there are SIX lines of XXXX and 0000s). “Love your Grandson Caleb.” On the back of the card it says, “Made especially for you by Caleb.” Thank you so much for your kind thoughtfulness for us, Caleb.

Not to forget little Aubrey, who will be 1 year old on Matt Mueller’s birthday, December 1st. She is such a cutie, and studies everyone and everything she sees.

Thank you, Debbie, Glen, Nicki, Dave, Jamie, Mark, Ken, and Joe for all the wonderful food which you worked so hard at so that we could have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day with all of you. Thank you also for the great “Glentainers” which you filled so bountifully with food for us to take home. We will be thinking of you as we again eat of that delicious Thanksgiving Day food. (November 24th is our son, Dick’s 55th birthday. We hope and pray that all of you there in Orlando, Florida, had a very blessed celebration of his birthday and also Thanksgiving Day)..

Not to forget our loved ones in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Severance, Colorado, and at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. How we wish our whole family could be together again, but since that cannot be, our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at Thanksgiving and always.

NOVEMBER 27, 2010 – THANKSGIVING DINNER AT JENNY AND KEVIN’S HOME AND CELEBRATION OF MATT’S 22ND BIRTHDAY (BORN DECEMBER 1, 1988)

Sue and Tim’s family is still blessed in all of them being able to come together at one place. Their family wasn’t able to be together on Thanksgiving Day, but worked it out so that they could all be there on the 27th. What a blessing!

Jenny and Kevin moved the loveseat, davenport, and area rug into the dining room and the dining room set into the longer living room. They added two more tables. It looked like our home in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where Dick was Pastor at Lord and Savior for 11 years. Our children became engaged, married, and had children. We filled the dining room and then went around the corner into the living room (there wasn’t a wall). During the summer our Steve had built a VERY long table around which we all sat during our barbecues. It was all so much fun! Sue and Tim are at that point in their lives now. As you can imagine, our family filled at least two pews in the church – blessed memories!

We were so happy to be with our son, Tim, his wife, Sue, Jenny, Kevin, and four boys – Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler – Kevin’s father, Bill, mother, Colleen, sister, Tanya, and friend, Chuck – Timmy, Megan, baby (to be born in April) – Chris – Julie, Tom, and Addie – Holly, Sandy Weiss (Holly’s Mom), and Matt. Again we enjoyed a delectable Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry salad, buns, and four desserts (I made a Hickory Nut cake, the recipe of which had been passed down to me by my cousin, Ali, whose mother had made it when the Kuckkan family got all together years ago). Everything was so delicious! Our families sure are great cooks and bakers. After the meal corn kernels were passed around, and each one of us thanked God for what He has especially done for us. Needless to say, there were tears. We thanked God for freedom of religion which some countries do not have.

At 5:30 p.m. the Parade of Lights was held in downtown Watertown. Dick and I decided not to go because it was very cold. We are not able to do everything we want to do anymore at our age.

But, we were invited to Sue and Tim’s home after the parade to celebrate Matt’s 22nd birthday – 22 years of God’s gift to our family (he is a sweetheart – one of the things he does is sneak a box of Russell Stover chocolates into our camera case or my coat pocket before we leave a family gathering. He told me, “I like to see you smile.” Thank you, Matt, for your loving kindness). Again, there was a VERY long table. Our son, Tim, grilled delicious venison, and there were noodles, cooked cauliflower and carrots, mushrooms, fruit salad, and a wonderful birthday cake decorated with a golfer and a golf cart. All of us sang “Happy Birthday and God’s Blessings” to Matt after which he opened his gifts.

All of us attended church services the next day, and then were again invited to Sue and Tim’s home. Sue had made a wonderful shrimp dip which was eaten with crackers, and then all of us ate delicious turkey, gravy, buns, stuffing, Hickory Nut cake and a pumpkin dessert which Sue made.

Then it was time for all of us to head home – New Ulm, Minnesota, Eagle River, Wisconsin, Sparta, Wisconsin, and Stoughton, Wisconsin. Sue, Tim, Jenny, Kevin, their four boys, and we live in Watertown, so we didn’t have far to go. “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.”

DECEMBER 4, 2010 – THE CELEBRATION OF AUBREY LEIGH WILSON’S 1ST BIRTHDAY (BORN DECEMBER 1, 2009)

IT’S ACTUALLY OUR STEPHANIE’S 47TH BIRTHDAY (BORN DECEMBER 4, 1963)

Wouldn’t you know it – the first winter storm came the night before Aubrey’s party in Jackson, Wisconsin, and we had about 2-3” of snow. We had planned to go, but the snow was still coming down the next morning, and we decided we wouldn’t risk the slippery roads. We called Jamie and Mark, and told them that we didn’t think we would be coming. Our Debbie (Mark’s mother) even called and said that she was worried about us driving on the roads. The party started at 2:30 p.m., and by that time the sun had come out, so we decided we would go. Dick drove the back roads, thinking that they probably would be okay, and he was right. They weren’t bad at all.

When we arrived, there weren’t many people there. But, splendid plates of Hors d’ Oeuvres, cheeses, sausages, vegetable pizza, beans, little wienees, etc. were there on their big half moon shaped counter in the kitchen. Soon many people came, including Debbie, Glen, Nicki, Dave, Cassie, Caleb, Melody and Steve. Many of Jamie and Mark’s relatives (Vicks) and friends were also there. It was great visiting with all of them. Aubrey, the birthday girl, was dressed so cute – in a t-shirt with something about a monkey on it and a very flouncy pink skirt.

We left Jamie and Mark’s home around 4:30 p.m. It was starting to get dark already. This time Dick took the main roads because he thought it getting colder might make the back roads slippery. We had a safe trip back. Thank you God, for again protecting us and for all the wonderful people you created for us to love and be with.

Of course, we just had to call our Steph when we got home and sing “Happy birthday to you and God’s blessings to you.” We sang to her answering machine because they weren’t home. Wish we could have celebrated her 47th birthday with them. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, Jeff, and family, too.

DECEMBER – 2010 – “PEBBLES FROM THE ROC” – FROM ST. MARK’S MESSENGER

(Every day THE ROC is open, a Bible/Talk Time is held usually from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. Approximately 20 to 25 teens are in attendance with most of them being unchurched. In addition to hearing the Gospel of Christ and the truths of God’s Word at Bible/Talk Time, the ROC staff is lovingly and sincerely applying God’s Word all the time to everything. For example, teens are taught to forgive each other as God, in Christ, forgives them (Colossians 3:13). Teens are taught to treat each other as they want to be treated (Luke 6:31). One day we were pleasantly surprised when a teen, who didn’t seem to be listening, said, “I think I get it. God’s Word and Jesus, the Savior, has everything to do with everything in our eternal lives.” By faith, the teen got it. Thanks be to God! “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Please continue to support the mission work of THE ROC in any way that you can. Gifts are always greatly appreciated. In addition to your generous gifts to operate THE ROC, another $1,000 was given in the past month to the building/remodeling so that $24,000 is left to pay on the project. Every day we give thanks for the facility we now have for THE ROC at 213 N. 3rd Street. Stop in sometime and say “Hello”, We love visitors.

DECEMBER – 2010 – NEWS FROM CHRIST LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EAGLE RIVER, WI.

We also received a very interesting newsletter from our grandson, Chris Mueller, Principal/Teacher of Christ Lutheran School in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Thank you, Chris, for keeping us up-to-date on all the interesting activities of your school. How we wish we were closer to you so that we could attend some of them. Chris’s e-mail address is: muellercs@gmail.com.

DECEMBER 8, 2010 – JOSH, JONAH, AND CONNER SING

Josh, Jonah, and Conner sang with the Sunday School at St. John’s Lutheran School here in Watertown (across the street from St. Mark’s). It hardly seems possible that Conner is old enough to sing with the children. Their Daddy, Kevin, did a wonderful job too. He is the music director at St. John’s and also teaches third grade.

DECEMBER 10, 2010 – WILLIAM “BILL” SCHWENKNER TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

When Dick and I decided, for a number of reasons, to remain in the United States during a furlough from Africa in 1972, we purchased a home at 1117 North Second Street. Down the street from us at 1037 North Second Street lived the Schwenkners. Our Stephanie and Steven were around “Billy’s” age, so played with him. The last time they were in Watertown Steph and Steve even went to the city hall to see him. He was an Assistant Fire Chief. It was a shock for all of us when we read in the Watertown Daily Times that Billy had taken his own life by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his chest at a public hunting ground. Dick and I had only seen him once with his wife when Tim, Sue, and we were looking for homes to live in when we moved from Medford, Wisconsin, to Watertown.

DECEMBER 10, 2010 – ARTICLE IN WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES

An article I wrote appeared in “Voice of the People” in the Watertown Daily Times. Here it is:

Editor: Daily Times:

After all of the “hullabaloo” about high speed rail, were there any thoughts about the danger of it? Years ago there was a double train track from Milwaukee to Watertown. Some unsuspecting people would let one train pass and drive into the path of another approaching from the other direction. I have actually witnessed two teens who were killed that way shortly after it happened.

The Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth, located at 213 North 3rd Street loves our teens and protects them. Let us protect all our teens and adults.

DECEMBER 11, 2010 – CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT ST. MARK’S

The title of the concert was “COME, REDEEMER, COME!”. We enjoyed the concert. My cousin, Louis Kuckkan, sings in the choir. It reminded me of all the concerts in which Dick, our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and I sang in. Those are some very blessed memories.

DECEMBER 11, 2010 – ERNA WESTPHAL, 99 YEARS OLD, DIES

Mrs. Westphal was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Wisconsin, when Dick’s father was pastor there. We knew her quite well. She took care of Dick’s mother’s indoor flowers when she would go to the state of Washington to visit Dick’s sister, Helen, her husband, Carl, and family. Dick and I went to the service at St. John’s to celebrate her life with Christ. She was buried on the 17th at Christberg Cemetery, next to her daughter, Dorothy. Their graves are near Dick’s parents’ graves. Many of our friends are also buried there.

DECEMBER 17, 2010 – ST. JOHN’S GRADES K-2 CHRISTMAS SERVICE

Joshua and Jonah recited the never-old Bible passages and sang hymns during the Christmas service. Kevin, their father, was the accompanist. All of them did very well. We are thankful that we are able to go to church and hear our great-grandchildren recite and sing, and hear their mother’s husband play the organ so beautifully.

DECEMBER 18, 2010 – INVITATION FROM OUR NEIGHBORS TO “JESUS CARES”

We were invited by our neighbors, Marlene and Russ Weber, and their daughter, Kathleen Kolander, to Luther Prep to hear and see Kathleen and other mentally-challenged children of God participate in a Jesus Cares Christmas worship service there. Kathleen and another person sang a hymn beautifully together.

DECEMBER 23, 2010 – HEADLINE IN DAILY TIMES – “TOWNE THEATER CLOSES”

The Towne Theater in Watertown, Wisconsin, used to be the Classic Theater. My sisters, Beatrice, Doloris, and I (Janet, my younger sister, is 18 years younger than me and wasn’t born yet) went there almost every Sunday afternoon to see the movies. Television hadn’t been invented yet, and it was a big treat for us to go there. There would be the newsreel, cartoon, and then the movies. Later on I met my future husband, Dick, and it was there that he first put his arm around me!!!!!

DECEMBER 24, 2010 – CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE AT ST. JOHN’S

How thankful we are that our loving Lord has provided us with His Word so that it can offset the disappointments in this world. The theme for the service was “The Signs of Christmas” – Part One: The Tree – Part Two: The Manger – Part Three: The Angel – Part Four: The Star. The wondrous
age-old Christmas story of the birth of our Savior was presented by Grades 3-8. Kevin Poston teaches the third grade at St. John’s and is also the Music Director. All of the children recited their recitations and songs beautifully. Thank you, Kevin, for doing all to the glory of God.

DECEMBER 24, 2010 – LIVE NATIVITY PICTURED IN WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES

We were very happy and thrilled to see and read in the Watertown Daily Times a beautiful colored picture of the live Nativity scene of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus accompanied with the St. Luke story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Every year the live Nativity scene is sponsored by the Watertown WELS Joint Ministry. (St. Luke’s, St. John’s, Trinity, and St. Mark’s congregations). Dick and I went over to St. Luke’s (only two blocks away from our home) and sat on bales of hay with other souls and watched and listened. It brought tears to our eyes. There was a live choir of angels (last year our granddaughter, Jenny, was one of the angels). The scene was complete with a live cow, live goat, and donkey. There were refreshments served in the cafeteria, so we had a chance to talk with many of our Christian friends. What a blessing!

DECEMBER 25, 2010 – CHRISTMAS DAY FESTIVAL SERVICE AT ST. MARK’S

We again celebrated the birth of our Savior at St. Mark’s where we are members. We heard beautiful Christmas hymns played by the Handbell Choir, instruments (trumpet, trombone, violin, flute), singing by the choirs, and a sermon by Pastor Karl Walther. The theme of the sermon was: “We’ve Had a Baby!”, and the parts were: 1. He is our heroic Savior – 2. He is our eternal security. The organist and choir director is Mr. Adrian Smith, a classmate of our granddaughter, Jenny, and her husband, Kevin, while they were all students at MLC (Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota).

DECEMBER 25, 2010 – CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS AT SUE AND TIM’S HOME

Again, it was a festive happy celebration with all of Sue and Tim’s family present. Abundant delicious food was eaten. Julie had made a very cute gingerbread house, but it was not the edible kind. Beautiful gifts were opened and there was much excitement. The most excitement for us was when we opened a package, and it was a “converter!” Quite awhile back, I had said to Tim, “I wish there was some way in which Dad’s slides could be put on his computer.” Tim said to me, “There is, Mom.” He told us that slides can now be put on a machine which converts the slide pictures into digital on the computer. I got so excited! Dick has thousands of slides, taken all through our married life – in the States and in Africa – which have moved around with us or sat in storage. Some of the slides he used in his lectures in the States about our mission work in Africa.

So now we have a converter, thanks to Sue, Tim, and family, and Dick already has put over 1,000 slides on his computer. We, and our “children” (now adults), and their children are elated to see pictures of our lives in the past. I also took pictures which are in my many albums, but it is so great to see more pictures of our children when they were babies and we were so young. Also, there are pictures of our young parents, our sisters, and their families. What treasures! We thank God for this miraculous blessing!!!!!!

To add to this blessing, Mike Nehls (my sister, Beatrice, and her husband, Donnie’s, son), came to our home with more slides. He had gone through slides which his parents have and found some of our family, too. There were 42 of them, so he handed them to Dick and me, and Dick put those on his computer. So thanks to Mike, we have more slides of our parents, sisters, our children, and us.

DECEMBER 26, 2010 – “VOICE OF THE PEOPLE”

Editor: Watertown Daily Times

Concerning the article “Local Theater Closes” which appeared in the Thursday, December 23rd edition of the Daily Times, it is very sad that the Towne Cinema has to close its doors.

How many people in Watertown remember when it was the “Classic Theater?’ If you do, do you remember the very tall marquee’ which stood on a broad overhang over the sidewalk, and the whole thing was lit up like a Christmas tree so that it could be seen up and down Main Street for a long way?

At that time, in the 1940s, my two sisters and I would go to the cinema almost every Sunday afternoon. There was a lady in the ticket booth next to the sidewalk selling tickets, and they were only 10 cents each! How many of you remember that? And the theatre was wide – it had a huge middle section with another section on each side. And it was full of people on Sunday afternoons!

One of my sisters and I sat in the middle section about two-thirds up from the front. The younger sister sat in the very front row. I can still see her sitting there with her little “pigtails”.

First came the newsreel – usually about what was going on in the second World War. Then there was a comedy starring Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Mickey Mouse, Road Runner, and others. After that we were treated to a double feature. We saw western movies starring Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, and Gary Cooper. Also there were wonderful musicals starring Betty Grable, Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, Debbie Reynolds, Dinah Shore, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley, to name a few. There were romantic and war movies starring Gene Tierney, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, Ronald Reagan, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, William Powell, Jimmy Stewart, and so many other wonderful actors and actresses. Remember the ones who made us laugh – like the Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello?

Television wasn’t invented yet in the 1940s, so people were enthralled by the movies shown at the Classic Theater (Towne Theater). When my future husband took me to see a movie there, it was the first time he put his arm around me. I am sure there are many people who read this who have also had wonderful memories of loving to go to the cinema there. My sisters and I would sometimes sit through everything twice!!!!!

A BIG THANK YOU TO STEVE LIND AND HIS FAMILY FOR TRYING SO HARD TO KEEP THE CINEMA IN WATERTOWN GOING!!!!

DECEMBER 27, 2010 – ROC CHRISTMAS PARTY

A picture and article about the ROC Christmas party appeared in the Watertown Daily Times. The article said – “About 35 teens and 15 adults attended the party at the ROC Youth Center at 213 North Third Street. Pictured are some of the teens playing one of the games which had been organized by the teens themselves. The youth center is open for all teens from grades 7 through 12, and is open after school on Wednesday through Saturday.” Dick and I were at the ROC for the party. It is always a joy to see such happy and active teens. The ROC is like a beacon in many of their lives.

DECEMBER 28, 2010 – HOLLY AND TOM CELEBRATE THEIR BIRTHDAYS

Holly Mueller, Matt’s wife, celebrated her 22nd birthday (December 24th, 2010), and Tom Pasch, Julie’s husband, celebrated his 29th birthday (January 3, 2011) on December 28th. All our grownup grandchildren and their spouses now have responsibilities, too, so celebrating their birthdays on the 28th was for convenience’s sake. Of course, there was great food and a birthday cake. Holly’s side of the cake had a cute clown, and Tom’s side had a golf cart and golf bag. Again, we had loads of fun!

DECEMBER 29, 2010 – MARIAN L. THOMSEN JOINS HER HUSBAND, DUANE, IN HEAVEN

Marion (Tesch) and her sister, Dorothy, attended St. Mark’s school with me. Her husband, Duane, went to his heavenly home on January 26, 2010. He had been a beloved visitor of the ROC where he played checkers with the teens. Dick and I saw Marian last on November 6, 2010, at the Dedication of the Heritage Assisted Living & Community Care Facility. Also, she invited us to visit with her in her apartment, which we did. She was on oxygen, but we had a nice visit with her, and Dick and I prayed with her. We attended her funeral at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on January 4, 2011. We will miss her. We still see her sister, Dorothy (Tesch) Schmied at church services, suppers, etc. Dorothy told me that five members of their family (shortly after one another) had left their earthly home to go to their heavenly home.

DECEMBER 29. 2010 – INVITATION TO GRANDPARENTS’ DAY FROM GRANDKIDS

Sue and Tim, their grownup children, spouses, and children invited Joanne and Jerry Brandt, and us, to go with them to have breakfast with them at Perkins Restaurant here in Watertown for “Grandparents Day”. This has become an annual custom. All of us had delicious breakfasts. Thank you all for your thoughtfulness.

A BIG THANK YOU FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Thank you to our families and friends for all the beautiful unique cards, cute pictures (many adorning our refrigerator), very interesting Christmas newsletters with pictures, most welcome gift certificates, and other gifts we received from you for Christmas. Dick and I are truly blessed, and we sincerely appreciate everything. May our loving God bless you through the new year, 2011, and always.

DECEMBER 29, 2011 – “BIG NEWS” FROM OUR GRANDDAUGHTER, CHRISTINA (WEILAND) GOLUMB

Christina sent e-mails to everyone in our large family that she was married to Mike Golumb on December 28th. It was a very private wedding with only their families present. They were married by a judge at the courthouse in Merrill, Wisconsin. We wish for them God’s richest blessings.

JANUARY – 2011 – CHRIST LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EAGLE RIVER, WI., NEWSLETTER

Christopher Mueller, Principal/Teacher of Christ Lutheran School, again sent us a very interesting newsletter. On the front of it is a beautiful colored picture of the school children formed in the shape of a cross inside Christ Lutheran church building. It is awesome! And there is a wonderful message wishing everyone a blessed celebration of our Savior’s birth. (To read about Christ Lutheran School, please refer to www.christeagleriver.org) or Album #91 of our album collection).

(Since the publishing of the Pebbles From The ROC, a couple stopped in and, to our joy and surprise, wrote out a $10,000 for the Building Project). Together we hope we will be able to reach this amount soon. Thanks for your help! Also, volunteers are always appreciated at THE ROC. Stop in and talk to Pastor Mueller to see if it is something for you.

JANUARY 2, 2011 – A VISIT FROM THE WEILANDS

Sue, Jim, and Laura came from their home in Merrill, Wisconsin. Because Jim was busy with his church duties during the holidays, they came the 1st of January. Jimmy also came. We had a happy time with them and also at Sue and Tim’s home with their family. We enjoyed having them stay overnight with us, and were sad when they left. Distance separates us from some of our families, but it does not separate us from the love in all our hearts.

Subject: Re: MOM’S (IRENE’S) MEMOIRS – PAGES 219 AND 220

Yes, it is the truth; the best things in life are free. Well said, Mom,

JANUARY 4, 2011 – DECEMBER 26, 2010, “VOICE OF THE PEOPLE” LETTER PUBLISHED

The article which I wrote on December 26th about my and others’ happiness concerning the Watertown cinema re-opening was not published until January 4th. I called the Watertown Daily Times and they said that the article which Dick had e-mailed for me was “misplaced”. They found it, and on the same day it was published, there was a picture of the Towne Cinema being remodeled. Under it was written: “Workers have been spending time recently making improvements to the Towne Cinema on Main Street in downtown Watertown. Preparations are being made for the theater to reopen later this month. A story on the front page of Monday’s Daily Times discussed the reopening.”

JANUARY 5, 2011 – FROM – mtenderendiinu@aol.com

Subject: THANK YOU FROM MOM

Dear Dick and Wanda,

Thank you so much, Dick, for your “short but sweet” one-liner about what I wrote in my Memoirs about “the best things in life are free.” Yes, they are. You have proved that by making me so happy that you are reading my Memoirs. Sometimes I wonder if anyone is reading them, and now I know that you are. God bless you always, Dick, in whatever you say and do. Love, hugs, and kisses, Mom

P.S. Dad and I hope and pray that everyone in your family received our Christmas gifts (Applebee’s cards). It’s not much, but we want all of you to know that we love you very much and that our thoughts and prayers are always with you.

JANUARY 8, 2011 – HEADLINE IN THE WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES – “CINEMA WANTS LIQUOR LICENSE”

Yes, our elation about the Watertown Towne cinema re-opening was short-lived when we – and others – read about the cinema wanting a liquor license. What is happening in this town? We are shocked!

JANUARY 8, 2011 – AN E-MAIL LETTER FROM RUTH SELLNOW <risellnow@charter.net>

Subject: Movies Long Ago And Now

Thanks to Irene M. in her “Voice of the People page” regarding what was once the old Classic Theatre in town. Now the business is going to reopen under new management. What is the disturbing thing? They want a liquor license. We have 53 bars in town and then we note that many package places (Walgreens*, grocery stores, etc.) already sell liquor. I think we have a problem with consumption! The movies today do not always have a point (plot, good lines of writing) but often engage in extremes, showing car smashes, violence, and the like. How sad. We have enough bad news pushed at us as it is.

Enjoy the extra minutes of daylight each day as we head to Spring.

*Walgreens seems to use no apostrophe in the name. Check their ad.

JANUARY 11, 2011 – A LETTER FROM GERRY MARTIN TO “VOICE OF THE PEOPLE”

Editor: Daily Times

Congratulations – city of Watertown – you have finally come up with a perfect solution to our drinking and driving problem in Watertown! Now you think it is a good idea to have parents sit and drink in our local theater while showing Disney films to their children – and then guess what – you can drive your children home when you have been drinking! This is one of your better ideas – keep up the good work. I sure hope you will put some serious thinking into this potential disaster before you approve this.

Gerry Martin

JANUARY 18, 2011 – DICK FALLS DOWN AT AUGIE’S ELITE CUISINE COOKING SHOW

GUESTS WERE GOING TO GET SAMPLES OF FOOD LIKE AUGIE COOKED – DICK SAID HIS LEG WAS ASLEEP, SO I WENT TO GET MY FOOD. BUT, I LOOKED BACK AND SAW HIM FALL WHEN HE TRIED TO STAND UP. I RAN BACK AND KNEELED NEXT TO HIM, SAYING, “ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? IS ANYTHING BROKEN?” HE SAID HE DIDN’T THINK SO. ONE OF THE MEN BROUGHT HIM FOOD AND HE ATE IT SITTING THERE. HE MANAGED TO GET UP AFTER HE ATE. HE WAS BADLY BRUISED. I PUT ALCOHOL ON THE BRUISES. BUT HE DID HURT AND THE BRUISES ARE STILL THERE – ON HIS FOOT, WHERE THE BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER BIT HIM ON HIS LEG, AND ON HIS HIP. HE DID HIT HIS HEAD ON A PILLAR, BUT THANK GOD, NOT TOO BADLY. THE PAIN IS SUBSIDING AND THE BRUISES ARE FADING, BUT I AM STILL PUTTING ALCOHOL ON
HIS BRUISES. IT IS NOW JANUARY 31, 2011

JANUARY 19, 3011 – ARTICLE WHICH APPEARED ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES – “Council Oks beer, wine, licenses for local theater”

We could hardly believe it when we read those words. The thinking of many people today is what the world says and does, not what the Bible says. 1 Peter 5:8 says: “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” I was appalled when a “Christian” told me that he is in favor of liquor in the cinema! One of my favorite Bible passages is Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”. God is in control.

JANUARY 26, 2011 – A GREAT BLESSING FOR DICK – LETTER FROM AN OLD FRIEND

We not only have our disappointment in this life, but our blessings. Dick was greatly surprised when he received a letter from Allan Aldinger, containing a picture of him, his wife, five children, and thirteen grandchildren. Allan was a member of Dick’s father’s congregation in Ridgeway, Wisconsin. That was 70 years ago. He also included a copy of a Christmas service which was typed by Dick’s father. Some of the hymns were in German. Dick wrote back to Allan and also sent a picture of our very large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren which was taken on September 6, 2009, when we were surprised by them to celebrate our 80th birthdays. We thank God for His many blessings!

JANUARY 27, 2011 – TIMMY, MATTHEW, AND HOLLY WILL GRADUATE

Our grandson, Timothy Peter Mueller, Jr. received his graduation completion letter and will graduate with a Master’s Degree from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. His brother, Matthew, and his wife, Holly, will graduate from MLC with a college degree. All of them, God willing, will graduate on May 14th. We thank God for His bountiful blessings.

JANUARY 29, 2011 – WEDDING OF ANDREW TYLER KELLBERG AND MELODY FEY SAELEE

We were invited to the wedding of Andrew, son of Mark (Helen and Carl’s son) and Kathy Kellberg, to a girl named Melody, in the state of Washington. We would have loved to go, but it seems that our long distance traveling days are coming near an end. We wish the happy couple and a long and blessed Christ-centered life together.

JANUARY 30, 2011 – ATTENDING ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, WATERTOWN, WI.

Again we attended St. John’s which is located in the next block from St. Mark’s, where we are members. The Sermon Text was: 1 Timothy 6:12 – “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take heed of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
The Sermon Theme was: “Onward Christian Soldiers”

Kevin Poston, husband of Jenny (daughter of Sue and Tim) played the organ for the service, and Joshua and Jonah, their children, sang “Armor of God” with the other children of grades K-4.

JANUARY 31, 2011 – FROM THE LAST LETTER FROM HELEN, DICK’S SISTER

“Now the other bit of information about me. My back has been so sore that walking is very difficult and the pain is about 7-8 level so I am heading for surgery on the 8th of February. I will tell you more about that when I call this weekend. Just wanted you to know so you can add that to your prayers. Hope I can reach you this Saturday. I will call then since your Green Packers are playing in the Superbowl next Sunday.”

Love you – God’s blessing Helen

JANUARY 31, 2011 – CONGRATULATIONS

Subject: CONGRATULATIONS

Dear Tim:

Your Dad has told us that you will graduate with Matt and Holly in May. However, your graduation will be a little different than theirs. Yours will be with a Master’s Degree.

For the gifts our all-wise God has given to you to acquire that earthly prize, we thank Him with hearts full of gratitude. Yes, together with you, we give Him all glory and praise.

Nevertheless, we must tell you that we cannot be more proud of you. Your abilities — and humility — move us to thank our God for giving you to us as a loving grandchild. God bless you.

And God bless Megan and your little one in like measure — and all those whom He has placed in your sphere of influence. May they not only benefit temporally, but also eternally as a result of your dedicated service to our Savior and Redeemer.

With all our love,

Grandpa and Grandma Mueller <><
