Irene’s Memoirs: Chapter 97

NOVEMBER 2, 2011 – ‘LIL ACCIDENT’

Hi all,
Without boring you with the details, I just wanted to let you all know that I had an accident on my horse yesterday. Some of you might know about the minor incident I had last week but this time was much worse. I was riding on the road with some friends, just walking when Cisco started bucking and rearing for no apparent reason at all. The girls say I rode him out for a while but finally went off of him.
Long story short, I ended up in the hospital overnight with a concussion and a sprained ankle and a few bruises. If I hadn’t been wearing a helmet, it could’ve been much worse. Thank God for the incident the week before which prompted me to wear a helmet. God is good!
I love you all and don’t worry. Doc says I can’t ride for a few months after a concussion. Oh well, that will give me time to work out the kinks on the ground with stupid Cisco! LOL! Love you all! Sue

Sue wrote to us at 9:52 PM on November 2nd. We checked our e-mail that night and found the above letter from our Susie. Needless to say, it was a sleepless night, especially for me. Sometime before this accident happened, she had told us that she had been galloping on Cisco and fell to the side of the horse. Thankfully, she had only bruises that time, but decided to wear a helmet when she rode her horse. The accident could have been much worse, like she said. God sent His holy angels to spread their protecting wings over her.

NOVEMBER 3, 2011 – AN INVITATION ARRIVES FROM AUBREY WILSON

Dick and I were invited by Jamie and Mark Wilson to a fun birthday party for their little Aubrey. She will be 2 years old on December 1st, but the party will be on December 3rd at their home. Sadly, we will not be attending because as Dick wrote to them – “By the time the party begins, it will already be dark – and you know how we like to drive in the dark”. We were at Aubrey’s 1st birthday party last year, and did have a fun time. There was so much food, and all of it delicious!!!! Thank you, Jamie, Mark, and Aubrey for the invitation. Aubrey will have a little baby brother around December 25th. We are all looking forward to that blessed event.

NOVEMBER 4, 2011 – A “DEATH TRAP” IS JUNKED

Our son, Tim, called us from Oconomowoc about 10:00 a.m. and asked us to come and get him. He said that he had taken his old ’59 Dodge van there for wheel alignment, but found out that the frame was completely broken. The repairman had the van on a hoist, and showed Tim the frame. Tim told us that it had happened awhile ago when he drove over a railroad track. The van could not be repaired. Tim said that it was a “death trap”. It was a miracle that he was not injured or even killed driving that van. We thank God for protecting our dear son. We were all happy to leave that van behind us.

NOVEMBER 5, 2011 – EDWARD KUCKKAN CHOSEN FOR HONOR FLIGHT

Edward Kuckkan, my cousin (his father, Edward, and my father, Henry, are brothers), a World War II Veteran, was chosen to travel to Washington, DC with the Honor Flight on November 5th with his escort, grandson, Joel Haselow. “Eddie’s” great picture in his uniform and write-up were in the November 3rd Watertown Daily Times. We know that Eddie was in active duty during World War II in Europe and received medals (one the Purple Heart) for his bravery. AWESOME!

NOVEMBER 6, 2011 – DIRECTOR OF CAMP PHILLIP PREACHES AT ST. MARK’S

Pastor Tom Klusmeyer, Director of Camp Phillip, located in Wautoma offers a variety of experiences for families and children. He was invited to preach for the St. Mark’s celebration of its Fall Mission Festival. The sermon was very interesting. Dick and I have been to Camp Phillip. Its year-round ministry, both on-site and off-site, provides more than 4,000 kindergartners through 12th graders with an environment, programming, and staff that nurture their faith. The seven year-round staff, 30 summer staff, and 100 high school volunteers all have detailed training for the needs of campers. Sue and Jim Weiland’s children have served as volunteers and love it.

NOVEMBER 7, 2011 – THE OWLS MEET AT ST. MARK’S PARISH CENTER AT 11:30 AM

We attended the OWLS get-together. First there was a delicious potluck lunch to which everyone contributed. Then the presentation was made by Pastor Karl Walther on “Our Church Body’s Upcoming Decision Regarding Bible Translation”. He said that there is a new translation of the Bible which is already printed by the Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Michigan. We know that some people were not happy when the 1984 NIV translation replaced the King James translation. The issue will be put to vote at WELS district conventions in the summer of 2012. God is in control.

NOVEMBER 7, 2011 – SUBJECT: SAD BUT HAPPY NEWS

Dear All,

The old van that has served so well for maybe ten years is GONE. I had to junk it after taking it in for an alignment and finding out that the frame was cracked in various places. So long good friend!

I will now be in the market for an inexpensive car or maybe a larger truck or van that can pull the boat.

The motorcycle is presently my means of transportation.

Thought I would share the sad news about the van with you. Down deep, I am happy it is gone as it was looking pretty bad.

Love,

Dad (Tim)

NOVEMBER 9, 2011 – A LETTER FROM SAMI JO’S GRANDMA

Dear Sami Jo,

Hi! You are always in our thoughts and prayers because we love you so much. We hope and pray that you are taking good care of yourself. Grandpa and I are wondering if you received the envelope with Ma’s things which was sent October 21st. There were two "shadow boxes", a "God Is My Refuge" plaque, and a horse pin. Please let us know.

Grandpa is doing very well, and we are so thankful to God that he is feeling so much better than he was. We are looking forward to when you and your Mom will be coming to Wisconsin. Have you and she decided where and when you are staying overnight while you are here? As we said, you are welcome to stay here. We have one spare bedroom.

Uncle Tim will be coming soon. His van was a "death trap" because the whole frame underneath it was broken, so he got rid of it. He has a lecture this morning at Bethesda, so he is using our car. He has a motorcycle, but it is raining and cold. Our old truck which he could have used is in Mel’s garage to be repaired. He and Grandpa tried to repair it, but couldn’t. So far we haven’t heard what is wrong with it.

Bye for now. With God’s richest blessings, loads of love, hugs, and kisses, Grandma (and Grandpa)

NOVEMBER 10, 2011 – TIM GETS A 1999 DODGE DURANGO

Dear Family,

I bought a different car/truck yesterday. It is a:

1999 DODGE DURANGO
4 DR. WAGON/SPORT UTILITY
5.9L V8

It has a Class III hitch on it and so it can easily pull anything. It sucks gas but I don’t travel far to work and it will be nice to have a truck to pull the boat and other things.

The Durango also has three bench seats like the old van.

Love,

Dad

Dick and I are very happy that Tim has found a vehicle which he likes and will serve him well. All he had was his motorcycle, and that would not do very well, especially since Wisconsin was hit with a “freak snow storm” on the very day he got it. We happened to be with Tim when he got the Durango because all of us, including Sue who had off work because of the storm, went to Culver’s to eat. Tim told us he had found a vehicle right here in Watertown. So we took him there, he made the deal, we helped him clean it out because the man has three kids, so there were Cheetos, a car seat, etc. inside of it, and off he went with the Durango! As Dick always says, “The Lord Will Provide”!

NOVEMBER 10, 2011 – MEMORIES

Dear Ray and Lois:

What a beautiful picture — and to think that you remember that it was taken fifty years ago. That tells us beyond a shadow of a doubt where your hearts often are — south of the equator in Zambia and Malawi — where our hearts often are, too.

I must have been standing right next to you when you took that picture because I have one almost exactly like it. It is a picture that I used to close my lectures when we were on furlough. "As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work." John 9:4

Do you know that there was a time when I asked to meet with the Executive Committee for Central Africa to volunteer to return to Central Africa? A Divine Call was about to be extended for a missionary to serve in Zambia. Obviously, I did not receive that Call. Our all-knowing God had other plans for us — and we bowed to His Will. We pray that we served Him well here in the States — even as we sought to do in Central Africa.

Yes, our gracious God has blessed us richly through our service in His Name in Africa. We have blessed memories of victories won over sin, death, and the devil — victories won in sin-lost souls through the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ Jesus, our one and only Savior and Redeemer.

Praise the Lord! We join you in those words. Irene has had cataracts removed from both of her eyes now — and sees clearly. One morning she asked me to turn out a light — and I had to tell her that there was no light on. Because of astigmatism, she does have to wear glasses — but that is only an annoyance now. Praise the Lord!

I have had a gall stone removed from the duct that runs from the gall bladder to the intestine. When I told our doctor at my annual checkup that I had experienced chills and a fever at the same time, and that I felt very weak, he ordered an ultrasound and CAT scan for me. That is when they discovered the gall stone.

Now that it has been removed I feel much better. In fact, I have been able to do things that I was unable to do before.

The CAT scan also showed a number of spots on my liver. We don’t know exactly what they are — and we are not about to find out. A biopsy would have to be performed — and we have decided against it. We again put ourselves in our loving Lord’s hands and say, "Thy Will Be Done" — or as you so very well put it, "’grass WILL WITHER … and the FLOWER WILL FADE … but heaven awaits us when all of our diseases WILL FOREVER BE GONE & we will be forever with the Lord.’"

This has become a longer epistle than I intended it to be. God grant, however, that it does bring you the realization that you are constantly in our hearts and our minds.

God bless you both — and keep you in His tender loving care now — and forever.

A Brother and Sister because of our Brother, Christ Jesus,

Dick and Irene

NOVEMBER 17, 2011 – ABOUT SAMI JO

Good morning all,
I wanted to follow up and let you know how Sami’s results came back from her blood work. As you can see below from Doctor Chase in Denver somehow she is still in the normal range for her kidney and he and we are so thankful. When I called him he said that he was shocked and only by the grace of God did this happen. He is such a wonderful doctor, friend and Christian man. I just wanted to share.
Steph
Dear Heitsch Family,

Thank you for working together. I prayed.

The thyroid values were fine. The microalbumin kidney test was 2.5 which is well below the upper limit of normal of 7.6. God is forgiving.

With best wishes,

Peter Chase

NOVEMBER 17, 2011 – ABOUT SAMI JO

Dear Steph,

A note from your Mom, too, to tell you that Dad and I thank God from the bottom of our hearts for the results of the blood test. We know that God is with us all, and He can work miracles in our lives. Yes, we can see by Sami’s doctor’s letter that he is a Christian man. We are thankful for that tool.

We are looking forward to your’s and Sami’s arrival. We do wish that Jeff could come with you, but we understand. Looking forward to seeing you and Sami on Tuesday for dinner. With much love, blessings, hugs, and kisses, Mom (Grandma)

NOVEMBER 24, 2011 – THANKSGIVING DAY AND OUR SON, DICK’S, BIRTHDAY

“Now thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done In whom His world rejoices,
Who from our mother’s arms Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love And still is ours today”. – CW 610

After many e-mail letters, telephone calls, etc., our six children (Debbie, Dick, Tim, Sue, Steph, and Steve), spouses, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren managed to be together with us for a very happy, blessed, and glorious Thanksgiving weekend. Dick and Wanda came from Orlando, Florida, on Thanksgiving Day and Steph and Sami Jo came from Cheyenne, Wyoming, on November 22nd. Debbie, Tim, Sue, and Steve all live in Wisconsin. We thank our dear Lord for the blessed gift, too, of taking care of all of them during their travels by planes and cars. Can you imagine people traveling by horse and buggy in the old days?

Steve, Debbie, Steph, and Sami Jo came to our home on Tuesday, the 23rd of November. We went to Culver’s for dinner and had a great time. We were blessed in attending the 7:00 PM Thanksgiving service with Holy Communion at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church to praise and thank God for our blessings. Pastor James Werner preached the sermon. His theme was:

“We Seek God’s Blessings”
1. So His ways are known to all
2. Our Lord gives us His bounties
3. We praise our Lord

Steph and Sami Jo stayed overnight with us which made us very happy. On Thanksgiving Day, November 24th (it was also our dear son, Richard John Mueller’s 56th birthday) all of us met at the ROC (Recreation And Outreach Center for teens), and we had an absolutely fabulous dinner, thanks to all of the planning by Tim, who is Pastor/Director of the ROC, and cooperation of all of our families. There was plenty of room at the ROC for all of us. Also there are pool and ping-pong tables, TV (showing the Packers playing a football game which they won), etc. for entertainment. We had ordered a big delicious chocolate cake from Perkins with “Birthday Blessings – Deb-57, Dick-56, Steph-48” on it as part of the decoration. We also brought ice cream to go with it. Then all of us went to Sue and Tim’s home to “hang out”. As usual, I am waiting to pick up pictures which I took, and am anxiously looking forward to seeing them. Thank you so much, Tim, for making arrangements for the use of the ROC, and thank you, Tim and Sue, for the use of your beautiful home. We know your loving kindness is much appreciated by all!

NOVEMBER 25, 2011 – THANK YOU FOR COMING FOR THANKSGIVING

Dear Steph and Sami,

Thank you so much for coming to be with all of us. Dad told me when I just asked him, that you would be arriving back in Wyoming about now. That’s hard to believe because you were just here with us last night. It brings tears to my eyes to think that you are so far away from us again.

But you are back with Jeff and your other loved ones there – and your horses, Sami. We know that God is with you, too, so we accept His will. We treasure the time you had with us. We did miss you, Jeff, but understand why you couldn’t be with us.

With God’s richest blessings, love, hugs, and kisses, Mom (Grandma)

NOVEMBER 26, 2011 – ANOTHER BLESSED DAY

Sue and Tim invited us all for lunch. Dick and Wanda went to a deli and brought ham, turkey, bread, buns, etc. and it was delicious! Sue made her delectable lasagna for supper, and that too was delicious! The Watertown Parade of Lights was in the afternoon, but sadly it was raining. We did go to Julie, Tom, and Addie’s home so that those who hadn’t seen it yet could see it. Also, especially the children, wanted to see their cute cat, “Toliver”. What a joy all of us had in just being together/

NOVEMBER 27, 2011 – FILLING FOUR PEWS AT ST. MARK’S

It was just like “the old days”. It reminded me of when Dick was Pastor of Lord And Savior Evangelical Church in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Our families filled four pews, just as we did then – only by the grace and loving kindness of our dear Lord. What a wonderful blessing! Pastor Karl Walther preached the sermon. The theme was:

“Our Blessings During The Advent Season”
1. Eyewitness Certainty
2. Close Relationships
3. Cleansing From Sin

Our families sat next to and behind us. Pastor Walther could not believe his eyes, he said. I told him that some of them were not able to be with us. We were sad that Nicki and Cassie could not come because they were sick. Our family now numbers 77 people, counting us! We thank God over and over again for His loving kindness. We went to the ROC for a delicious pizza lunch, and later went to Sue and Tim’s home for brats, hamburger, hot dogs, salads, drink, pies, and a lot of love going around. It was a miracle that Sue and Jim’s ever-growing family came from all over and was there! Sue said that she would use one of the pictures for their annual Christmas letter. They weren’t all able to be together on Thanksgiving Day. Little “Grace Elizabeth Golomb”, who was born April 14, 2011, came with her Mommy (Christina) and Daddy (Mike) Golomb. Of course, everyone wanted to hold her.

Sue, Jim, Laura, Gabriel (Becky and Patrick’s 5 year old (will be 6 December 13th), and “Chanel” (a Chinese girl staying with them while attending Northland Lutheran High School in Wausau, WI – where Laura attends), came to our home and stayed overnight. This made us very happy. Of course, it’s always sad when our families leave us. They come and they go. That’s life!

NOVEMBER 28, 29, 2011 – TIME WITH OUR SON, DICK

Dick came to stay overnight with us, and Wanda went to stay overnight with her parents who also live in Watertown. We went to Applebee’s for supper. All of us had their House Sirloin Steak which we love. Both Dick and I had told the waitress about Dick’s birthday, so they brought a huge ice cream dessert with three spoons. It was luscious! He stayed overnight, and the very next morning, the 29th, he left to pick up Wanda at the Sterwalds, and left for Orlando, Florida. Again, it was sad to see him go. Where does the time go? Thank you, Dick and Wanda, and all of our families for coming to help make our Thanksgiving one to remember!

ABOVE ALL, I FALL ON MY KNEES AND PRAISE AND THANK GOD
FOR TAKING CARE OF MY LOVING HUSBAND, DICK.

HE IS FEELING SO MUCH BETTER SINCE THE
GALLSTONE WAS REMOVED IN THE DUCT BETWEEN
HIS GALLBLADDER AND INTESTINE OCTOBER 5th, 2011.
BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT GRACE AND MERCY, DICK AND I
WERE ABLE TO ENJOY OUR WONDERFUL FAMILIES –
GIFTS FROM GOD – 75 PRECIOUS SOULS!   

GOD BE WITH ALL OF YOU ‘TIL WE MEET AGAIN

LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE

(DECEMBER-2011) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC One of the teens, who attends our Watertown Recreation and Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth, recently posted on Facebook to all her friends, “I love going to C-2 at THE ROC to study God’s Word.” What a joy to see something positive on Facebook shared by a teen who once didn’t love or trust in Christ, her and our Savior. For those who don’t know, C-2 stands for Christ-Connection. C-2 is a program started and administrated by our four Watertown WELS churches before the ROC existed but which is now held at THE ROC. Twice a month, on Monday morning during school hours, we send a bus to pick up teens (must have parental approval) from the public high school to be brought to THE ROC. From 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., we have a Bible Study and refreshments for the teens. C-2 is for public high school teens from our churches and THE ROC (mostly unchurched). C-2 is a great and wonderful program which reaches teens who don’t get THE WORD like our teens who attend our Lutheran Schools.
All are invited to stop in at the ROC anytime to see the Christ-Centered Youth Center we all support. You may also consider being a volunteer. Such helpers are always needed. Check out more about THE ROC at our web page, www.thewttnroc.com.

DECEMBER 1, 2011 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUBREY WILSON

Aubrey Wilson’s 2nd birthday was on December 1st. However, an invitation to a birthday party for her said that the celebration for it would be on December 3rd. Dick and I were invited, but the party was from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and because it would be dark when we would travel home from Grafton, Wisconsin, we regretfully declined the invitation. Now that winter is upon us, it gets dark earlier. We know that all who were there had a very good time.

DECEMBER 2, 3, 4, 2011 – LIVE NATIVITY – OH, HOLY NIGHT

Members of the four Watertown WELS churches presented a live Nativity outside of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Live people portrayed Joseph, Mary, and a chorus of angels sang favorite hymns. Also, a live cow, sheep, and goat were also inside the stable. There was a shepherd and wise men too. The people who attended were very attentive. Audience members were treated to hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies inside following the performance. The December 3rd Watertown Daily Times had an article and two wonderful colored pictures of the Nativity.

DECEMBER 3. 2011 – SON, DICK, AND DAUGHTER, STEPH, RUN MARATHON

The 13-mile Marathon was held in Orlando, Florida. Dick lives in Orlando and Steph in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but brother and sister got together and ran all the nine miles together. There are some great pictures of them on the Internet. Both of them have medals hanging from their necks, and they have huge smiles. Congratulations, Dick and Steph! What a great birthday present for Steph, whose birthday is December 4th. Dick had a belated birthday present. His birthday was on Thanksgiving Day, November 24th. We are thankful to God that all of our children (who grew up in Africa) are very active, just like their Dad and Mom. We are also thankful to our ALMIGHTY God in that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” – as David wrote in Psalm 139:14 – “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

DECEMBER 4, 2011 – PASTOR TIM MUELLER CONDUCTS THE LITURGY AT ST. JOHN’S

Pastor Rodney Warnecke preached the sermon, and our son, Tim, was invited to conduct the Liturgy. Pastor John Boehringer’s mother was ill, so that is why Tim was asked to help. As usual, he did very well. The children who were in grades 1 and 2 sang “Prepare a Way for the Lord”. Our great-grandson, Jonah Poston, who is in grade 2 sang while his father, Kevin Poston, music director for St. John’s, directed. Kevin and Jonah also did very well.

DECEMBER 4, 2011 – ORA ANN STUEBS’ SOUL IS CARRIED TO HEAVEN

We met Ora at Megan and Timmy II’s wedding on December 26, 2009, in Sparta, Wisconsin. I took a beautiful picture of this fine lady at the reception. Megan’s mother, Mary, is the daughter of Ora. We were all saddened by her leaving us. God had granted her 97 years on this earth. She had a beautiful coat which Megan said should be given to me. Her mother wanted me to have it. Thank you so much for your loving kindness, Mary, and Megan.

DECEMBER 9, 2011 – BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR MATT MUELLER

Matt’s 23rd birthday was on December 1st (the same day as Aubrey Wilson’s 2nd birthday), but his birthday had to be celebrated on the 9th when all in the family were able to be at Sue and Tim’s – at 10:15 pm. You can see on one of the pictures that, because it was late, I already have my hair put up in “pin curls”, and wearing a turban, just as I have done for most of my years getting ready for bed. It was great to be with all of them again. Joanne and Jerry Brandt were able to be with us, too. As usual the food was great! We sang “Happy Birthday and God’s Blessings” to Matt, and had a very delicious, beautifully decorated birthday cake. It had a 23 birthday candle on it, which he blew out, and he opened gifts. Pictures in our album #98 attest to Matt’s happy smiling face.

DECEMBER 10, 2011 – BABY SHOWER FOR JENNY POSTON

Again the ladies (Sue, Julie, Megan, Bekah, Holly) did a fantastic job of having a great shower for Jenny (she, too, is very good at organizing) at Julie, Tom, and Addie’s home. There was a wonderful 14-foot Christmas tree in their living room. Many women came and all of us had a great time. Debbie, Nickie, Cassie, Caleb, Jamie, and Aubrey came too. The food was great, interesting games were played, and baby GIRL gifts were opened. What a miracle it is that Kevin and Jenny are expecting a baby girl (Elliana, meaning “The Lord has answered”). Elliana Grace has four brothers! There were four pregnant ladies at the shower! How great thou (God) art!

DECEMBER 17, 2011 – TIM STOPS IN WITH HIS TWO YOUNGEST GRANDCHILDREN

Tim was babysitting Addie and Tyler, both two years old. It was so cute the way he came to our door holding each of them by his hands. They stayed for awhile and ate one of my Christmas cookies which I had baked. I took a cute picture of Tim, Addie, and Tyler in front of our Christmas tree.

DECEMBER 18, 2011 – ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN SCHOOL PRESCHOOL/GRADE 2 SERVICE

We were very blessed to attend St. John’s Preschool/Grade 2 Children’s Christmas service. Conner Poston is in Preschool, and Jonah is in Grade 1. The church was full of people who wanted to see and hear their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Of course, we were there to see and hear two of our great-grandchildren, Conner and Jonah. We couldn’t see them from where we were sitting, but did hear them. All of the children did very well in telling and singing the never-old story of Jesus’ birth.

DECEMBER 19, 2011 – MY HUSBAND, DICK, HAS TWO TEETH PULLED

Dick had a terrible toothache on the 15th, so had to go to the dentist, Dr. Harry Gibson. They took X-rays, so we were told that an abscess was starting which caused the pain. The doctor told us that the tooth could be pulled, but advised that Dick could have a root canal and crown. It was not feasible for us to have that done. The other tooth was broken off which also could be pulled. The doctor prescribed some antibiotics to relieve the pain. On the 19th Dick had both teeth pulled. He told the doctor that he is 82 years old, and he will have a perfect set of teeth in heaven. How true! Our bodies will be perfect!

DECEMBER 20, 2011 – HERITAGE HOMES HOSTS AUGIE’S ELITE CUISINE SHOW

Dick felt quite well after having his two teeth pulled the day before, so we attended Augie’s Elite Cuisine Cooking Show at Heritage Homes. The show will be held there every third Tuesday of the month. The other Tuesdays’ Cooking Shows will be held in the basement of the Watertown City Hall, as usual. The Show at Heritage Homes had at least 60 people attending. The menu was Christmas Day Roast Pork With Fennel And Onions, Double Baked Red Potatoes, and Auntie Mamie’s Succotash. Augie cooked everything there in front of the audience, the four people at the Chef’s Table got to eat the delicious food, and all the rest of us received a sample of everything which Augie’s very nice wife, Kim, had doled out. We again enjoyed the Cooking Show very much.

DECEMBER 20, 2011 – BRAYDEN DAVID WILSON IS BORN

Again we thank our ever-loving God for blessing Jamie, Mark, and Aubrey with the gift of a healthy baby boy. How great God is! He protected both Jamie and Brayden. He weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz., and was 21 inches long. Jamie and Mark sent a picture of him, and he is also a very handsome little boy. Again, we praise God because Brayden is “fearfully and wonderfully made” – Psalm 139:14. Now Jamie and Mark have a son, and Aubrey has a brother. We are looking forward to meeting him perhaps sometime next week. Mark’s brother, David, Ann, his wife, and children, Emma, and Elaina are coming from Livonia, Michigan, where David is Principal/Teacher of the WELS Lutheran School. It will be a blessing to see all of them too.

DECEMBER 24 (CHRISTMAS EVE) AT ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN SCHOOL – GRADES 3-8

Since Kevin Poston, Jenny’s husband, is the Music Director and 3rd Grade Teacher, and Joshua is in 3rd grade, we attended the Children’s Christmas Service at St. John’s. Jenny had saved seats for us in the front of the church for her parents, Sue and Tim, Kevin’s parents, Bill and Colleen Poston, Joanne and Jerry Brandt, Julie, Tom, and Addie Pasch, and us. All of us could see the children and easily hear them recite and sing about the birth of Jesus. Pastor John Boehringer preached a sermonette about all of us giving glory to Jesus as the shepherds did. After the service all of us went to Sue and Tim’s for Papa Murphy’s pizza, slush, and delicious Christmas cookies. It was Holly’s 23rd birthday, so all of us sang “Happy Birthday and God’s Blessings” to her on the phone.

After Dick and I got home, we opened our gifts to each other. He gave me a “wedge” from Aurora (formerly Busse’s) Pharmacy for my acid reflux (to keep my head elevated at night), and I gave him a Norelco shaver. He had been shaving by putting soap on his face with a brush, and a razor (sorely old fashioned). We also opened a box which Steph, Jeff, and Sammy had sent us from Cheyenne, Wyoming. We could not believe our eyes when we saw two Cheyenne Frontier “Daddy Of ‘Em All” sweatshirts, a maroon and yellow one for him, and a green and yellow one for me. Also there was a “Made With Love By Mom” pie covering with a cross on top, and a very beautiful card with a Walmart gift card inside. Everyone in our family knows how much we “hang out” at Walmart since it isn’t very far from our home. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for everything, Steph, Jeff, and Sami Jo.

DECEMBER 25, 2011 – BRUNCH AT JULIE, TOM, AND ADDIE’S AND 5:30 SUPPER AT SUE AND TIM’S – AND THE GREEN BAY PACKERS BEAT THE CHICAGO BEARS

Sue, Tim, Julie, Tom, and Addie again went to St. John’s to help Jenny with the children during the church service. Kevin again participated in the service, and we were later told that he even had a solo. He has a very good voice. Dick and I decided to go to the 9:00 service at St. Mark’s. Pastor James Werner preached the sermon, the theme of which was: “The Light Is Shining” (John 1:1-5, 10-13) – 1. Who is the light? 2. The light gives true life. There was beautiful singing by the choirs and music by a small orchestra. We were all invited to Julie and Tom’s beautiful home for “brunch”. And what a feast it was! There was a sausage, bacon, and egg bake, jello with bananas, and pancakes. It was accompanied by Berre’s Highlander coffee, egg nog, and a champagne drink. Wow! When Addie woke up from her nap, she opened her beautiful gifts. It was such fun watching her opening them. Julie, Tom, and Addie gave us a box of Pot of Gold chocolates (I love chocolates), a Charlie Brown’s Christmas book (to read to Addie), two Russell Stover candy bars, and a beautiful Christmas card with a wonderful family picture inside. Thank you so much, Julie, Tom, and Addie for the wonderful time we had in your home.

At 5:30 p.m. we were invited to Sue and Tim’s for another wonderful time. I told Dick that I just had to take a walk in-between meals, so went to Walmart to walk. But, it was closed! Imagine our surprise. Dick drove around and we found that Walgreens was open, so we walked there. I felt better after that. Before we went to Sue and Tim’s, I put on my Frontier Days Daddy Of ‘Em All sweat shirt with an “I Met Miss Frontier” sticker on the front (it is so nice and warm) – I think the love that came with it makes it warm, too. It fits perfectly, and I was nice and warm all evening at Sue and Tim’s. Again, Sue, Tim, Joanne and Jerry Brandt, Julie, Tom, and Addie, and we were together. Sue and Tim served tasty ham, cheesy potatoes, corn, brownies made by Julie with chocolate chip mint ice cream, and Christmas cookies. We watched the Green Bay Packer/Chicago Bear football game, but again the Packers won. Dick is a Bear fan, so Steve and Melody had given him a very wonderful Bear jacket. It starts a lot of conversations when he is wearing it. He tells people that “it is easy to be a Packer fan because they usually win, but it’s harder to be a Bear fan – period! Sue and Tim gave us a very clever homemade Christmas card with “Eat out with us at all these places – Applebee’s, Perkins’, Arby’s, and Culver’s”. The logos for all of the restaurants were duplicated on the card. Thank you again, Sue and Tim, for everything!

DECEMBER 25, 2011 – A BIG THANK YOU

Dick and I want to thank all of you relatives and friends who remembered us this CHRISTmas with beautiful cards, e-mail newsletters, phone calls, and gifts. It all means a lot to us. We are thankful to be here with all of you, and thank God especially for letting us reach these “ripe old ages” to enjoy all of you, and, God willing, more of His precious gifts (babies) to come. God bless all of you!

DECEMBER 27, 2011 – A GOOD MISSIONARY FRIEND IS IN HOSPITAL IN COLORADO

We have known Hilda Kretzmann and her husband, Ted, since the time when we were all missionaries together in Zambia and Malawi. Hilda and I have been corresponding with each other since then. They lived in Rocky Ford, Colorado, after he retired. Her beloved husband went to his heavenly home quite a few years ago, but we have visited her in her home and kept corresponding with her until just recently when I did not hear from her anymore. She told me a couple times that she had fallen, but I did ask her who the pastor is who is serving Rocky Ford now. She told me it is Pastor Robert Glasgow from Pueblo, Colorado. So when I did not hear from her, I called him, and he told me that she is in the hospital, and is “in and out”. I asked him to convey our thoughts, love, and prayers to her, and also if he would please call us as to what is happening with her. She is 98 years old, and I always enjoyed hearing from her, a fine lady if there ever was one.

DECEMBER 28, 2011 – WITH THE JOYS THERE ARE THE SORROWS

We were saddened when we received via e-mail news that another one of our African missionaries, Pastor/Missionary John Janosek left his earthly home to live in his heavenly home for eternity. He, Yvonne (his wife), and children were missionaries in Africa at the same time we were. When there were Missionaries’ Conferences in Zambia, “Uncle Jack” (as our children called him) would stay with us, and when there were conferences in Malawi, Dick would stay with them. Jack and Yvonne had retired in Canton, North Carolina, so we haven’t seen one another for years. There was a memorial service in Ashville, North Carolina, and others are planned in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and perhaps Malawi. We don’t know if we will be able to attend any of them, but all in the family are in our thoughts and prayers.

DECEMBER 30, 2011 – INVITATION FROM DEBBIE AND GLEN

Debbie and Glen invited us to their home to have a CHRISTmas get-together with their family. Nicki, Dave, Cassie, Caleb, David, Ann, Emma, Elaina, Mark, Jamie, Aubrey, and the new not-so-little addition, Brayden were all there. Emma and Elaina, David and Ann’s two girls came out of the door to meet us. We hadn’t seen them for quite some time since they live in Livonia, Michigan, where their Daddy is Principal/Teacher of the Lutheran School there. Both of them have grown so much. What a joy to be with all of them! We met Brayden, who is a beautiful black-haired bouncing baby boy, and we loved holding him. I’ll never forget those big eyes looking straight at me as if to say, “I know who you are. You’re my great-grandma.” We had such a great time with the whole Wilson clan. When we got there, Debbie was still working at Kohl’s, but the family had a delicious lunch for us, and then our Debbie came home. She brought a delectable ice cream birthday cake home in honor of Nicki (39), Jamie (29), and Ann’s (38) birthdays, all in January. Emma delighted us with a trumpet solo. She does very well. All of us opened our gifts which was a lot of fun. Thank you for the very generous gifts. I was telling them how their grandpa always brought me a box of Black Magic chocolates whenever I had a baby in Africa – haven’t had them since. Well, David had one of those new thing-a-ma-jigs in his hand, and ordered a box of Black Magic to be shipped to me. That is absolutely amazing! Thank you, Debbie and Glen, for having us with all of your family in your home. It was truly a blessing and joy to be with all of you.

It was snowing outside and we wanted to get back to Watertown before dark, so we started out. The roads were slippery, and got worse when we were just outside Watertown. Thankfully, our good Lord was again with us and brought us safely home. We did stop at the ROC to see our Tim and all the children he takes care of there. They joyfully met us at the door and gave us big hugs. It was a very happy and blessed day!

DECEMBER 31, 2011 – NEW YEAR’S EVE AT ST. MARK’S

This time we sat together during the New Year’s Eve communion service with Sue and Tim’s whole family. Timmy, Megan, and little Timmy III sat next to us. And we were overjoyed to hold little Timmy. He was so content sitting on his Great-Grandpa’s lap during the whole sermon. He, too, looked us straight in our eyes as if to say, “I know who you are. You are my Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma”. What a joy to sit with all of them! Pastor James Werner’s inspirational sermon was based on Titus 2:11-14 and was titled, “Living a Godly Life in 2012”. After the service all of us went to the ROC to be with Tim and the ROC children, too.

LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE

(JANUARY-2012) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC On Monday, January 23rd at 7:00 p.m., EVERYONE is invited to THE ROC for our ANNUAL Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center for Youth (THE ROC) MEETING. At the meeting, we will give thanks to God for the many teens who have heard the Gospel of Christ at THE ROC over the EIGHT YEARS it has been open. The doors of THE ROC were opened on December 3rd, 2003. Former ROC teens stop every night to express their gratitude for THE ROC and the help it gave them during their rough teen years. Many often speak of our nightly Bible-Talk-Time as what they remember the most as God’s Word gave them eternal blessings through Christ, their Savior.
We transported a good number of teens from THE ROC to our Live Nativity at St. Luke’s. What a blessing to have so many unchurched teens hear about their Savior in such a unique way. The teens were deeply touched by the birth of their Savior.
We invite EVERYONE to stop in at the ROC anytime to visit. Also check out our web page, www.thewttnroc.com. From the web page, learn more about our volunteer program by clicking “Staff Info” and then “Adult Volunteer Staff Responsibilities”. We are always in need of more volunteers.
Recently another check came from Thrivent as Thrivent members directed $688.00 Thrivent Choice Dollars to THE ROC. We thank you for keeping THE ROC in mind when you designate your Thrivent Choice Dollars. Every penny counts.

JANUARY 1, 2012 – BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR

We were invited by Sue and Tim’s grownup children and their wives and husbands for a “Grandparents/ Grandkids tradition of a brunch at Perkins restaurant — and to join them for some wonderful fellowship. Your grandkids will pick you up at your home on Sunday, January 1, at 10:15. It will be a fantastic way to start off the new 2012 year. Cannot wait to see you then  ”. But it was not to be. Dick and I were not feeling well. We had been awake the whole night. I think I ate too much during the holidays which caused me acid reflux discomfort. Dick even vomited and was very weak. I had the same thing about a week ago. There is a lot of flu going around. So we COULD NOT go to Perkins, or to Sue and Tim’s home for the Grandparents/Grandkids opening of gifts, or to the birthday celebration for Holly, 23, and Tom, 30, even though we very much wanted to be there. Sue, Jim, Laura, and Chanel were going to come there after their church service, but the weather is not good to be traveling on the roads, so they will not be coming. Sometimes our plans are not the plans of God.

JANUARY 2. 2012 – MATTHEW AND HOLLY HAVE EXCITING NEWS

Dick and I did not go out at all today. Dick is feeling very weak, and I have somehow gotten a cold. Matthew did call us on the way back to their home after the holidays, and asked us if we wanted to know the name of their little baby, who will be born around January 27th. I had been asking before what the name of the baby is, but they announced it to the family this last weekend, when we were not there. Matt said the name of their baby girl is “Lilie Jennifer Mueller”. That is a very pretty name. My father had a sister named “Lily”, but Holly and Matt are spelling the name differently. We look forward to another one of God’s precious gifts arriving in our family. Lilie is our 27th great-grandchild.

JANUARY 6, 2012 – SOME MORE “BIG NEWS”

Tim stopped in today to find out how we are. We told him that finally I was able to get out of the house to do some shopping, but Dick is still weak and could not go. Before he left, he said that he had some “big news”. I said, “Julie’s pregnant”. “Yes, Julie is pregnant”, he said. When “Timothy Peter Mueller III” was born, I guessed the name of the baby before I was told. And this time I guessed right again! Talk about women’s intuition, right? Yes, that is big news, and we are happy for Julie, Tom, and Addie. God’s richest blessings to all of you.

JANUARY 7, 2012 – DEBBIE, NICKI, AND CASSIE COME TO VISIT

Cassie, Nicki and Dave Chmielewski’s daughter plans to attend Luther Prep, so they came to Watertown because she had “placement tests” there. Both Dick and I are finally feeling well after being “out of commission” for about six days. They mentioned going out to lunch so we called Tim and asked him if he wanted to go with us to Steakfire restaurant. It was fun. Tim had to go to the ROC, so he left, but Debbie, Nicki, and Cassie came to our home and we had a nice visit. The roads are good because every day has been a sunny day and no snow for quite awhile. What a blessing! We are not complaining even though it is cold.

JANUARY 8, 2012 – A RELAXING DAY

We attended the church service at St. Mark’s with some of Sue and Tim’s family – Kevin, Jenny, and four boys (Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler), Megan, Timmy II, Timmy III, and Julie, Tom, and Addie. Tim was able to be there, but Sue had to work (she had gone to Tim’s Bible Class). Pastor Michael Jensen preached the sermon. It was based on Acts, chapter 13. The theme was “Jesus, the Father’s Light for the Gentiles”, and the parts were: 1. The Light for All. 2. The Light for You. After the service all of us met at Culver’s restaurant for lunch. As Tim said, “It’s great that we don’t have to do the dishes.” During the meal JULIE TOLD US THAT SHE IS PREGNANT! We told her that her Dad had “spilled the beans” already. She said that she knew he had. Anyway, we are ecstatic that she is pregnant. That means that again we have three great grandchildren to be born – Holly and Matt’s, Jenny and Kevin’s, and now Julie and Tom’s. It was two since Jamie and Mark’s baby, “Brayden” was born on December 20th. God’s loving kindness to our family is overwhelming, and we thank Him. Jenny, Kevin, and the boys gave us a Culver’s gift card which we used for two sundaes, one strawberry, and one raspberry – deeeelicious! Also, they gave us a homemade Christmas mitten ornament with a great picture of their four boys. It says on the back of it, “Made with (heart) by Jonah”. We have added it to the others on our Christmas tree.
That evening Megan, Timmy, and little Timmy came to our home to visit. We had such a nice time. Timmy told us that he has a Call to Star of Bethlehem School as Principal/Teacher in New Berlin, Wisconsin. He is in our thoughts and prayers as he deliberates this Call. Before they left they gave us gifts – a box of turtle chocolates for me – yum, yum, and a St. John’s Lutheran School cup for Dick. Timmy told us that he had ordered only 21 cups, so we feel very honored that he would think to give us one of them. Thank you so much!

JANUARY 14, 2012 – MELODY AND STEVE COME TO VISIT

Melody and Steve came about 2:00 pm. We had a great visit with them, opening Christmas gifts. It’s a little late, but better late than never. We were all getting hungry, so they took us to “On The Rock” restaurant. We had wonderful delicious meals there. It was sad to see them go. Thank you so much for everything! Your gifts were so very generous. God bless you.

JANUARY 14, 2012 – MY BOX OF BLACK MAGIC CHOCOLATES ARRIVES

As I wrote on Page 329, David Wilson ordered a box of Black Magic chocolates just like his Grandpa had given me every time I had a baby in Africa, and today, January 14th, it arrived! Of course, I had to sample one – two – three of them, and they are exactly as I remember they tasted – amazing! I know I will enjoy and savor all of them. Thank you so much, David, Ann, Emma, and Elaina!

JANUARY 15, 2012 – ATTENDED TIM’S BIBLE CLASS – AND A BIG SURPRISE!!!!

We attended Tim’s Bible Class at St. Mark’s. It was very interesting – on Ephesians 3:1-13, 4:1-28 – Celebrate Grace, Proclaim, grow and live. But before he started the Bible Class, as they came through the door, they announced to us and everyone there:

“WE HAVE A BABY!” LILIE JENNIFER MUELLER WAS BORN JANUARY 15TH, 2012. THE TIME WAS 3:02 AM. SHE WEIGHED 5 LBS. 12 OZ., AND HER LENGTH WAS 18.5 IN.

Wow! How exciting! We are so happy for you. Lilie became a child of God through Holy Baptism when Matt baptized her on the day she was born. God bless all of you richly.

JANUARY 15, 2012 – SUE, JIM, LAURA, JIMMY, KAREN, BRIAN, JESSICA VISIT

We were so happy to see all of them! We caught up on all the news, and then it was time to go to Sue and Tim’s where Sue, Tim, Jenny, Kevin, Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler, Julie, Tom, and Addie would be. We all had a delicious meal together. The dessert was brought by Dick and me. It was a chocolate birthday cake we had ordered from Walmart for Sue (Weiland) with “A Blessed Birthday, Sue” on the top of it – also a “52” candle (her birthday is actually on January 17th). All of us sang “Happy Birthday and God’s Blessings to you” to Sue. She blew out the candle and pictures were taken. We visited for awhile. Jim had “a ball” playing with 2-year-olds Tyler and Addie. Then we went back to our home and opened gifts. Imagine our surprise and shock when we opened a box, and there was a DIGITAL CAMERA – and also an Applebee’s Gift Certificate from Sue, Jim, and their family. Thank you so very much! Jimmy, Karen, Brian, and Jessica left and went home, but Sue, Jim, and Laura stayed overnight. The next day we ate breakfast, then lunch (delicious spaghetti which Sue cooked), and then it was time for them to go, too.

JANUARY 21, 2012 – FROM WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES – “CITIZENSHIP AWARD WILL HONOR FORMER POLICE OFFICER AND WIFE”

In a very long article (with pictures) in the Watertown Daily Times, Alfred (“Mickey”) Krahn, who passed away nearly 15 years ago, and his wife, Helen, will be remembered through an annual citizenship award starting in 2012. The idea to honor Mickey and Helen came to their son, Roger, and his wife, Laurie. “Krahn was best known for his work with youths in the community, and received special training to deal with juvenile problems”, Watertown Police Chief Tim Roets said. As quoted in the Daily Times: “Roger and Laurie Krahn hope the money ($1,000) included with the award will inspire more people to help the community. Members of the community can nominate candidates they feel meet the criteria. However, a group of four committee members may also nominate candidates if they feel someone should be considered. Nominations for the award will be accepted through March 31 at 5 p.m. Forms can be submitted online, or mailed to or dropped off at the Watertown Police Station”.

JANUARY 23, 2012 – TIM MUELLER, PASTOR/ DIRECTOR OF THE ROC, IS NOMINATED

Dick and I decided to nominate Tim and the ROC teens for the Krahn Citizenship Award, so the following letter was written on the form which we dropped off at the Police Station.

“As stated in the January 21, 2012, Watertown Daily Times – “Alfred (Mickey) Krahn started the Juvenile Division. He focused on helping youth stay out of trouble. He received special training to deal with Juvenile problems, Watertown Police Chief Tim Roets said.”

We thought of Pastor/Director Timothy Peter Mueller (PT as he is known by the ROC teens) as soon as we read what he said. PT is also “focused on helping youths stay out of trouble”.

We have visited the ROC often, and see the love and patience, yet firmness, which he displays for the teens. He is making a “significant contribution to the safety and/or welfare of the citizens of Watertown”. One of the teens who came to the ROC is now a chef in one of our local restaurants. Another one is studying to be a physical therapist. Some have become “Junior Volunteers” who help PT at the ROC. These are only a few of many success stories of former teens who came to the ROC.

We feel that PT is very deserving of the honor of the Alfred & Helen Krahn Citizenship Award.”

Now we wait until after March 31st to find out who will be nominated for the Award. Tim is in our thoughts and prayers.

JANUARY 28, 2012 – ELLIANA GRACE POSTON IS BORN

Kevin, the proud father, called about 9:00 this morning and told us that Elliana Grace Poston was born at 7:29 am. We have another priceless gift from our loving God – our 28th great-grandchild! She weighs 8 lbs. 7 oz. and is 20-1/2 in. long. Kevin called again about 12:00 noon and said that her Baptism is at 2:00 p.m. today at the Watertown Regional Health Center where she was born. We are anxiously looking forward to being there. We are thankful to God for another beautiful healthy great-grandchild. We have not seen Holly and Matt’s baby, Lilie Jennifer Mueller yet, so we are looking forward to meeting her, too, today. Wow! The Affirmation of both little ones’ Baptisms, God willing, will be on February 26th – Lilie’s in St. Mark’s Church at 9:00 am, and Elliana’s in St. John’s Church (in the next block) at 10:30 am.

JANUARY 29. 2012 – ANOTHER BLESSED DAY

Our Tim had the St. Mark’s Bible class on Ephesians 6:1-9; 1:15-23, 3:14-21; 6:10-24. It was all very interesting and inspiring, and there was a lot of discussion. After the Bible class we went over to St. John’s church where Jenny’s husband, Kevin Poston, is director of music and 3rd grade teacher, to hear Kevin play the organ, and our great-grandchildren sing with the other children. We had planned to go over to the school for a chili lunch, but Julie, Tom, and Addie invited us to come to their home where Holly, Matt, baby Lilie, and Joanne and Jerry Brandt would also be for lunch. We had delicious pizza brats and a wonderful visit together. Tom changed the oil in our Cavalier which made Dick and me very happy. Thanks, Tom! We did miss Sue and Tim who, after Bible class, drove up to Sparta where Tim, Megan, and little Timmy live. Tim II wanted Tim I to give him some fatherly advice as to what he thought about his Call to Star of Bethlehem, New Berlin, Wisconsin, as Principal/Teacher. After being at Julie and Tom’s home we went to Luther Prep where Alpha Resource Center was meeting, and Joshua was going to read an essay he wrote on “Why Does God Let Some People Suffer?” It was very good. Before the reading of the essays, we ate from a very bountiful delicious buffet. We did stay for the Alpha meeting. Needless to say, we were quite tired after such an eventful but great day.

JANUARY 30, 2012 – MORE BABY NEWS

Our Sue (Weiland) called and told us that Christina and Mike, her husband, have both found jobs. Christina is working in a “group home” and takes care of three people. Mike is selling steaks and seafood, stopping at homes to try and get orders. We are happy for both of them. We are also happy, thrilled, and thankful because I talked to Christina and she said, “I have some news.” And I said, “You’re pregnant!” I guessed right again, or is it because when ladies in our family say, “I have some news”, the words come right out of me. Another blessing – who will the next one be to say “I have some news -?????????          . Christina and Mike’s baby is due around mid-August. We now have 80 people in our immediate family. How great God is!!!!!!!!!

LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE

(FEBRUARY-2012) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC We thank God for your cheerful giving. Many of you give gifts to THE ROC through your congregation, and the gifts are then periodically sent on to THE ROC as a lump sum. For this reason, it is impossible for us to thank you personally, but we want to sincerely thank you now for your cheerful giving and generosity. At THE ROC, during Bible/Talk Time, we regularly include thanks to God for you in our worship prayers. We have been greatly blessed by you and through you.
We also thank our volunteers for their hard work at THE ROC and for the good ideas they come up with to share the Gospel. On New Year’s Eve a delicious banquet for the teens was prepared (Janine Petrie and Tyler Clemmons) using goodies many provided. During our Bible/Talk time it was announced the teens would have to pay $5.00 each for the banquet. As they were sad and upset, an adult volunteer (Todd Morris), dressed as Jesus, came out and announced the banquet was PAID IN FULL and was free for all. The point that was made was that our sins have been PAID IN FULL and we now enjoy the banquet of God’s love, forgiveness and eternal life.
Anyone is invited to offer such ideas and help to Pastor Mueller that can be used in the future. You can read about more blessings at THE ROC in the ROC Annual Report. Look for the report in your church annual report or request one from Pastor Mueller by calling (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mailing (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net).

C2 – Thanks for Being There

What were you doing to show your love for Christ and share His love with others at 9:50am this past January 9th? Hard to think back that far, isn’t it? Even if you can’t remember exactly what you were doing for Christ at that exact time, there is a specific way that you were joining with your fellow members at St. Mark’s to proclaim the love of Jesus. In fact, on January 9th you were also joining with your brothers and sisters at St. John’s, St. Luke’s, and Trinity to carry out a ministry called C2.

C2 is short for Christ Connection, a gospel ministry of the Watertown WELS congregations that takes place on the second and fourth Monday of each school month from 9:50am to11:45am. On those days Watertown High teens are granted release-time to attend, and then bused off campus to the ROC. There’s video Bible Study, fellowship time, food, and about 25 teens interacting with Pastors Warnecke, Mueller, Kuckhahn, Jensen and Gartner.

Thirteen years ago St. Mark’s started C2 partly as a bridge toward a youth center. Now that we’ve got the ROC, C2 continues to serve as a bridge to our youth center by bringing more Watertown High youth to the ROC. Most importantly for over a decade your C2 ministry has been telling youth about their Savior. Through this ministry they know that Jesus cares. They also know that you care, because by your offerings, prayers, and support of C2, you’ve been there for them. . . no matter where else you happen to be at 9:50am on the second or fourth Monday of the month.

FEBRUARY 5, 2012 – A VERY EVENTFUL DAY

Dick and I went to St. Mark’s for its church service and communion. Our Tim, Julie, Tom, and Addie were also there. It is always wonderful to see Addie go with her Dad, Tom, to the front of the church where Pastor Karl Walther had the Children’s Message. Pastor Charles Isles preached a very interesting sermon. The sermon was based on: Acts 16:29-34. The theme was: “An Inmate Leaves His Prison”- and the parts were: 1. The prison in which he was held 2. The way in which he was freed. After the service all of us went to McDonald’s for lunch. Addie enjoyed playing in the “children’s play area” there. We went to Sue and Tim’s home and watched the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots played the New York Giants. The Giants won, much to the chagrin of Tom who is a Patriots fan. It was Joshua’s 9th birthday, but the real celebration will be later when more of the family can be there for it. But, I did manage to “spank” him 9 times – with a pinch to grow an inch. Then we just had to call Timmy II in Sparta, Wisconsin, to find out if he had or had not accepted the Call as Principal/Teacher at Star of Bethlehem Lutheran School, New Berlin, Wisconsin. Timmy told us, “Yes, he had accepted the Call!” He had told the congregation at St. John’s, Sparta, what his decision was that day. So they will be moving to New Berlin after the end of the school year – another exciting time!

FEBRUARY 6,7 8, 2012 – VISITING RESIDENTS OF GOLDEN LIVING CENTER

Dick is 82 years old, and I will be 82 years old April 17th. We were asked by Mr. Bill Birsching of St. Mark’s Church (where we are members ) quite some time ago, if we would like to visit some residents at the Watertown Golden Living Center, a nursing home. We said that we would like to do that, so we went there last week Tuesday and Wednesday. The residents we visit, and others, are always happy to see us. We visited with one man and his wife who are in the same room. They do not get any visitors except Pastor Madsen from Okauchee. The man told us that his wife sleeps almost all of the time. Dick had devotion and prayers with him, and we visited with him. His wife was sleeping all of this time, but I did not want to leave before visiting with her, too. I went to her and said, “Ellie, I am Irene, and my husband and I have come to visit with you and your husband.” She opened her eyes, and there was a big smile on her face. We had a nice visit, and she told us that we should come back again. It is very sad to think that such wonderful people live in their own tiny world without anyone but Pastor Madsen and the workers at the nursing home to visit with. We also visited others, among them a lady, Jeanette (Westerhaus) Wiechmann, in the Memory Care unit. Lo, and behold, I went to St. Mark’s School and also Northwestern Prep with her. She had one long beautiful braid of hair down her back. She is older than I am, but both of us remembered each other. Her father, Professor Westerhaus was one of Dick’s and my profs at NW. Her brother, Martin, was in Dick’s class, and her brother, Paul, was in my class at St. Mark’s and NW. What a wonderful surprise and miracle it was to visit with Jeanette after all these years! Her mother was so friendly, too, always made a point to greet us when she sat across the aisle at St. Mark’s from Ma, Pa, and my sisters and brother.

We will be visiting the residents, God willing, as long as we can. Some of the residents are younger than we are, so we are very thankful that we are still able to do it. We had a meeting with Mr. Birsching and Marion Makowski, another Golden Living volunteer, on Wednesday morning in which we exchanged our experiences. After the meeting Mr. Birsching told us that he and his wife had just found out that their daughter, who was in the Army 21 years, has Lou Gehrig’s disease. She is expected to live 5-6 years. We know that only God knows. It was very sad news for Marion and us. Please keep the Birschings in your thoughts and prayers too.

FEBRUARY 8, 2012 – ARMY PICTURES FROM TOM PASCH, JULIE’S HUSBAND

Tom wrote an e-mail saying: “Good Morning All, Joshy asked for a pic of me from my old army days, and I dug out these photos. It’s been awhile since I saw myself in this form and I thought it would be cool to share proof I wasn’t always the delicate banker you know today. Love, Tom” There’s a picture of Tom in his camouflage suit standing next to his hummer, and two pictures of the gear he worked on. Dick and I think that it is probably like the same “gear” (microwave) that our son, Dick (R.J.), worked on while he was in the marines – pretty cool!

FEBRUARY 9, 2012 – AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE AT THE ROC

Dick and I love to go to visit the ROC teens, volunteers, and Tim. We were there the evening of the 9th. My loving husband had an experience there which he wants to relate to all of you. Here it is in his own words:

“Last night we popped in at the ROC. I was wearing my ‘Bears’ jacket. Some of the teens like it. Others, kidding, tell me that I can’t come to the ROC with my ‘Bears’ jacket. One of the older boys told me that last night. I replied that I am faithful to my Lord – and I am also faithful to the Bears. Without a moment of hesitancy, he replied that I was committing idolatry – that I was worshiping the Bears. Everyone who heard laughed – and our Son, Tim, said with some pride, “I taught him well.”

What a blessing we saw in that incident. Teens who once did not know anything about the one and only true God, now speak up for Him in an instant – and proclaim their faith in Him without hesitation. They are not ashamed to state their faith in the presence of their peers – or in the presence of their elders.”

FEBRUARY 11, 2012 – “HOW GREAT THOU ART, HOW GREAT THOU ART”

It was on this day that Jenny, Kevin, Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler, and Elliana invited the family to their home to celebrate Joshua’s birthday. We were all served a delicious brunch, Joshua opened gifts, and then we had a great visit together. The two new babies, “Lilie Jennifer Mueller (daughter of Holly and Matthew Mueller),” and “Elliana Grace Poston (daughter of Jenny and Kevin Poston),” were there, and when Bekah and Chris Mueller were holding them, they announced that they are expecting a baby around September 24, 2012. Imagine the joy and happiness of everyone when they heard that news!!!! Again, God is showing us how great and awesome He is!!!! Our hearts are filled with thankfulness. We can imagine how Bekah’s parents, Marlene and Mark Faugstad, her sister, Marta, and brothers, Jessie and Aaron, feel, too. Bekah and Chris were married in Mankato, Minnesota, at Bethany Chapel. Her father preached the sermon, and Tim married them on July 8th, 2011. Later on her father was ordained at Lengby, Minnesota, on August 28, 2011. He also has another congregation at Bagley, Minnesota. We thank our loving Lord for all of his blessings.

FEBRUARY 12, 2012 – TIM PREACHES AT ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH IN IXONIA

The church service started at 10:00 am, so we started out from our home around 9:30. When we got there, who should welcome us but Mr. Ralph Bankert, and his wife, Mary. Mary was a playmate of mine when we were both around six years old. My grandfather and grandmother, Carl and Johanna Kuckkan, lived on a farm across from Mary Newman’s parents farm. We never forgot one another, and so it was a joy to see one another again and talk about the “old days”. Tim preached a very inspirational sermon on “We Are ‘Jars of Clay’ For Christ”. Five of his and Sue’s six children, spouses, and children were there. Tim also had a very interesting Bible Class about experiences with the ROC teens. After that there were tables laden with food, food, and more food. Besides being plentiful, it was soooo good! We met a lady who is a niece of Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Edna Prahl. They owned the farm near Freistadt, Wisconsin, on which there was an extra house in which Dick and I lived after we were married while Dick was attending the Seminary. I taught first grade at Trinity Lutheran School in Freistadt. One of my students was Pastor Herbie Prahl who is now President of the Western Wisconsin District of the Wisconsin Synod. The lady also knew the Suelflows. Janice and Joyce were also my first grade students. Our granddaughter, Nicole Wilson, married Janice’s son, David Chmielewski. God performs miracles all of the time.

After we left our fellow-Lutherans at St. John’s, we went home, changed clothes, collected our baked squash and cherry pie to take to the OWLS meeting and potluck dinner at St. Mark’s. There were quite a few people there. Some were visitors from the OWLS from St. John’s in Waterloo. We had the meeting, a Sing-a-long, then dinner and visited with one another. Again, the food was soooo good!

FEBRUARY 14, 2012 – VALENTINES FROM “CANARY” AND AT AUGIE’S CHEF’S TABLE

You ask “who’s Canary?” Well, Dad and I call each other Canary. When we were in our teens, I traveled by train from Watertown and visited him when his Dad was Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Medford. Dick had a motor bike which was yellow and black. Calling each other Canary reminds us of the good times we had riding that motor bike. My hubbie sent me THREE musical e-mails for Valentine’s Day. They are:

VALENTINE FOR MY WONDERFUL WIFE

With you I’d do it here or there,
I would do it anywhere,
I would do it on a log,
I would do it in a bog,
I would do it in the park,
At break of day after dark
I would do it in a box,
Wearing just my yellow socks,
I would do it far and near,
Swinging from a chandelier,
I would do it out at sea,
In Paris, France, or Kankakee,
I would do it rain or shine….

I WOULD BE YOUR VALENTINE!
(inside a heart with an arrow through it)

A VALENTINE FOR MY WIFE

Know what’s better than being married to you?
That was a trick question!
There’s NOTHING better than being married to you.

QUEEN CARD

Happy Valentine’s Day to the Queen of my heart.
Dick

That wasn’t the end of Valentine’s Day. We were at the Chef’s Table at Augie’s live TV cooking show with Sue and Tim. All of us dressed in red. Augie cooked a huge yummy meal for us. The menu included: Baked Pork with Roasted Red Bell Pepper, Sweet Potato And Raisin Stuffing, and Scalloped Cabbage. Next week the Cooking Show will be at Heritage Assisted Living. Then all the equipment used for the show will have to be taken out there and set up. Many residents of the center come to the show, which is great.

FEBRUARY 16, 2012 – GOOD NEWS FROM SUSIE

Sue called us on her way to their beautiful home in Wildwood, and told us that Mike, Christina’s husband, who is now working for Tradesmen International, was chosen out of 10 people for a welder’s job. Then out of the 10 people, 4 were chosen, and he was one of them!!!! She is so thrilled. He will be working on a ship in the harbor at Green Bay, Wisconsin. God has answered all of our prayers.

FEBRUARY 24, 2012 – EYE APPOINTMENT

My left eye has been bothering me. I can see wonderfully with both eyes since my cataract surgeries, but my left one started itching with a little swelling, so we thought I’d better see what Dr. Edward Hoy, the doctor, would say about it. After examining it, he said there was an infection around the eye, and prescribed a medication. Thankfully, it is getting better.

FEBRUARY 26, 2012 – AN EXTRA-ORDINARY BLESSED DAY

Dear All:

Wow! The days do fly by — especially when you are having fun.

Yesterday we had fun again. Tim’s whole family was here for the Affirmation of Matt and Holly’s Lilie and Jenny and Kevin’s Elliana.

That was the serious part of the day — when we remembered that Lilie and Elliana were made children of God and heirs of eternal salvation on the day they were born. They are now in His loving hands with all of their sins forgiven. What blessings are theirs through the work of the Holy Spirit.

The fun part was the fellowship after the Worship Services — one at St. Mark’s and the other at St. John’s. The food was delicious — and in abundance. And the camaraderie was just as satisfying.

And now we face another day of our Lord’s grace. May we all rejoice in it — and continue to live to His glory.

With all our love,

Dad —– for Mom

Dear All,

This is Mom. I thought so much of Dad’s letter that I asked him to put it into my Memoirs. I have written “Mom’s Memoirs” from my birth to the present day. I can hardly believe it myself that I have had the strength and willingness to have done that – only with the help of God, I am sure (Psalm 18:1 – “I LOVE YOU, O LORD, MY STRENGTH”. What an extra-ordinary blessed day we had! How can we thank our loving, mighty, God for all He does for us?

FEBRUARY 29, 2012 (LEAP DAY) – IS IT A BOY OR GIRL BABY?

Julie Pasch called this evening and said that the doctor had done an ultrasound and proclaimed that her and Tom’s baby, expected in June, will be a girl! It still is awesome that the sex of a baby can be found out with an ultrasound! We found that out when our baby was born. We are very happy for them; also for their 2 year old daughter, Addie. She will have a little sister to play with! Again, we thank God for this blessing!

LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE

(MARCH-2012) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21, 22). At our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center for Youth, we teach the teens to test everything. Instead of outlawing computers, we teach the teens how to use them to God’s glory. Instead of outlawing music, we teach the teens how to choose music that pleases God. Such discerning of songs also comes during our Friday night karaoke time. All lyrics are to be approved before they are sung for karaoke. The approval process involves bringing up the lyrics on a computer and having our older junior volunteers test them according to God’s Word and then finalizing any approval with Pastor Mueller. It is such a joy to watch this spiritually healthy testing process as ALL of the teens learn so much about God’s Word and how to show love for and to their Savior by picking songs that don’t go contrary to God’s Word. All are invited to come in to the ROC and ask more about how we test and pick songs. The skills learned would be great for all parents and teens to grow in.

FUTURE 2012 ROC EVENTS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Sun., June 24, 2012, golf at 3 pm – ROC Golf Outing
July 19, 20, 21, 2012 – ROC Rummage Sale
Brat Stands – Dates not yet scheduled

MARCH 3, 2012 – A VERY THOUGHTFUL SON

We had quite a lot of snow (6”) overnight on March 2nd, so Dick and I were going to go out there to snow blow and shovel our driveway. We finished breakfast and put our jackets, caps, boots, and gloves on. Dick was just going out the doorway to the garage when we heard a huge WHIRRRRR, and there was our son, Tim, who had just started the snow blower so he could clear our driveway. Dick then helped him by shoveling the snow away near the front door, and it wasn’t long at all, and they came in for a cup of coffee. We thank God that he has provided Tim to be there when we need him. He told us a cute story. He had gone to Holly, Matt, and Lilie’s apartment in Brown Deer. Matt is attending our Lutheran Seminary. Anyway, he was trying to attach a fan and light where there was only a light fixture. He cut some wires which he thought were electrical – they weren’t, and he set off the fire alarm for the whole apartment complex!!! You can imagine what happened. All the people went outside in the cold, and fire engines, rescue squad, and police all came!!! He did not touch those wires after that!

MARCH 4, 2012 – SPECIAL MUSIC AT ST. JOHN’S

We attended the 10:30 am service at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. We sat in front so that Dick could hear better. There is an entrance near the altar of the church, and we find that we like to go into the church that way because then we can avoid all those steps through the main entrance. There is also good parking there. The sermon was preached by Pastor John Boehringer. The theme was “Are We Ashamed of Jesus?” Special music was sung by Kindergarten through 2nd Grade (Jonah Poston is in the 2nd grade). They sang “We Will Rejoice” beautifully accompanied by Jonah’s father, Kevin, on the piano and Mr. Zach Sartorius (LPS student) on guitar.

MARCH 4, 2012 – FUN SNOWMOBILING

After the church service we and some of the family who were able to be there were invited to Sue and Tim’s home for a delicious spaghetti dinner cooked by Tim (Sue had to work). We sat in the “new” dining room to eat. It had been the family room, but their ever-growing family needed more room than in the “old” dining room. The family room went where it had been which is great because it now adjoins the living room, so there now is one big living room. It works great. Everything was moved last weekend when the whole family was home for the Affirmations of Lilie and Elliana’s Baptisms. After the great lunch, visiting, and taking pictures, Dick, Tim, and I went to Julie, Tom, and Addie’s home which is near by. Tom, Tim I, and Tim II were waiting for us after they had gone snowmobiling in the big cornfield behind the house. I was thrilled to have snowmobiling rides. There hasn’t been much snow this winter, but there was still enough of Friday’s snowfall to go snowmobiling. It was fun!

MARCH 9-10. 2012 – BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The Basketball Tournament was at Luther Prep. Chris Mueller is the Assistant Coach of the basketball team of the Cardinals, Christ Lutheran School, Eagle River, Wisconsin. Dick and I, with many members of Sue and Tim’s family, watched four basketball games, two on Friday and two on Saturday. The Cardinals won the first two games, and lost the last two games. We sat on some very hard seats, but it was all worth it! I sat next to Bekah, Chris’s very sweet wife, and had a chance to get to know her. I asked her if she knew that Dick and I had met at the very place, Luther Prep when it was Northwestern Prep, and she said she didn’t know that. I also asked her when they would find out if the baby she is carrying is a boy or a girl. She told me that they would find out in May. That is so exciting! When I was pregnant, that was unheard of.

MARCH 11, 2012 – ANOTHER BLESSED DAY

All of Sue and Tim’s family who were at the Basketball Tournament went to the church service at St. Mark’s. After the service Sue and Tim invited us to their home for lunch. After lunch we had a wonderful visit together. Dick and I usually go to the OWLS at St. Mark’s at 3:30 pm. Many in the family were packing up again to go back to their homes about that time. Before we left Jenny and Holly decided to change the clothes on their baby girls, Elliana and Lily, so they could take pictures. While they were doing that, they looked like two little girls playing with dolls. I said to Dick, “I have to take a picture of the babies in their tutus!” So I did with my great digital camera which was a Christmas present. The picture is so cute. Then we went to the OWLS. Pastor Charlie Isles had a presentation on his work in Prison Ministry which was very interesting. Then all of us partook of a delicious potluck.

MARCH 12, 2012 – A FAMILY LETTER FROM DAD

Dear All:

Where last Monday went, I do not know — but it went by without two pages of Mom’s Memoirs being sent out. Sorry about that.

Today I am remembering — even though Mom and I had our annual checkup this morning. Our vital signs are all OK — and the blood tests we had a week ago showed nothing out of the ordinary. There is a bit of concern with my liver, but I still feel good.

I did lose eleven pounds since my last checkup — but mostly because I am trying to lose weight. I am too heavy. The doctor said that my optimum weight should be 180 pounds. I am at 190 now.

Mom and I try to walk at Wal-Mart every day — once or twice around the store. Our doctor was pleased with that.

So here are the next two pages of Mom’s Memoirs — and little health news. We hope they please you.

With all our love — and continue to keep us in your prayers.

Dad —– for Mom <><

MARCH 12, 2012 – VENUS AND JUPITER

My loving husband took me outside our home to look at the sky around 9:00 this evening. He had found out on the Internet that the planets, Venus and Jupiter, are shining brightly at this time in the west. It was very romantic. Dad said that Venus is the brighter planet. As time goes on, they are going to get closer to each other. And then Venus is going to go across the moon on June 15th. So every night we will be going out to see what is happening. It is so interesting, and like I said, “very romantic”. As Dad also said in the above letter, “continue to keep us in your prayers”. We love each other and all of you very much.

MARCH 12, 2012 – FROM ST. MARK’S MESSENGER

Rock River OWLS

The Rock River Owls will be meeting on March 20th at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown at 1 PM. The church is located at 301 Clark Street. Come join us for dessert and to hear from one of Watertown’s young people on “How the ROC has influenced his life.” The ROC is a Recreation and Outreach Center for Youth in Watertown supported by the Watertown WELS churches. A short business meeting will follow.

MARCH 15, 2012 – ST. JOHN’S SPELLING BEE

Joshua was participating in a spelling bee at St. John’s school. We had never been to a spelling bee, so looked forward to it. Joshua and a girl were asked to spell words, and Josh was asked to spell “were”. He asked for the word to be repeated, but he understood that the word was “where”, so he spelled it. We know that he could have spelled “were”. Oh, well, there will be more bees, we are sure.

MARCH 18, 2012 – OUTDOOR BBQ AT SUE AND TIM’S

Sue had to work, but Tim invited us over to their home for a 5:00 pm BBQ. Jenny, Kevin, Josh, Jonah, Conner, Tyler, Elliana, and pregnant Julie, Tom, and Addie were there. We ate outside because the weather was so beautiful, so unusual for March. Tim cooked tilapia, chicken, pork steak, and wieners on the grill, and also had noodles, corn, and Edy’s strawberry and chocolate chip ice cream with waffle cones. Everything was so delicious! Tim had two kites, one small for the little children and one big for the bigger ones (including adults) which he had bought to be flown. I had brought my camera, so took some pictures. And I got to fly a kite, which I had never done in my whole life. It was exciting and so windy. I really had to hold on to it. Dick also flew a kite. It was a lot of fun. We are young at heart. Oh, Kevin informed us that he has a divine Call to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lannon, Wisconsin. He would teach 3rd and 4th grades, and also be the Music Director there. He is in our prayers as he deliberates where the Lord can best use his service.

MARCH 19, 2012 – LAURA’S SONG

Finally getting around to sending you the words to Laura’s song she wrote. You can also view it on facebook on my wall because she performed it at the Northland talent show the other night also. It’s also on Northland’s website. She closed the show with it so it was thought provoking. Chanel also sang a Chinese song with two other girls that you can view on Northland’s website too. I’ll be getting it up on facebook soon. Love Sue

Vs. 1
Hey, Jesus, hey Father,
Please listen up, I pray.
Yeah, I know we haven’t spoken
What seems like decades,
But, I need you, yeah, I need you.
Chorus
Lord, wake me up,
Take this load off of me,
It’s crashing down on who I wanna be.
I’m lying here barely able to breathe.
Won’t you come along,
Reaching out to me.

Vs. 2

Hey, Jesus, I’ve been thinking
Bout all I’ve done this year.
Will I keep wandering, keep straying
From your loving voice I fear,
But you, keep hold of me
Yeah, you, keep holding me.

Chorus

Vs. 3

Hey, Jesus, take my troubles
and all my sins and guilt away.
Cast out all of my demons,
Keep me on the pure and narrow way.
Lord lead me, please lead me.

Chorus
MARCH 20, 2012 – PRESENTATION ABOUT THE ROC TO THE ROCK RIVER OWLS

St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) is just around the corner from where we live, so we did not have far to go to attend the presentation about the ROC to the Rock River OWLS. The presentation was lead by our son, Tim, Pastor/Director of the ROC. He had brought two teens, Brandon Simmons, a Junior Volunteer, and Tyler Clemmons, a Senior Volunteer, with him. Tim and the teens were very enthusiastic about the wonderful work being done there. The Light of God’s Word shines and radiates from their hearts. Both Brandon and Tyler told the people about how attending the ROC had influenced their lives. Brandon said that he was an atheist before he came, and Tyler had an anger problem. They said that all the sins they commit are their own responsibility – not to be blamed on others, like Adam and Eve did. Of course, Mom Mueller had her Christmas present, a digital camera with her, and took quite a few pictures.

MARCH 21, 2012 – SERMON PREACHED BY TIM

We attended St. John’s Lutheran Church for the Lenten service. Tim preached the sermon, the theme of which was “Glory Be To Jesus”. He talked about the Medal of Honor given to servicemen and women; giving glory to man. But that is nothing compared to the glory which we should give to Jesus – from all the prophecies in the Old Testament, and what Jesus did for us Himself. Thank you, Tim, we are proud of you.

MARCH 23. 2012 – MATT’S CHAPEL DEVOTION AT THE SEMINARY

Dick played Matt’s devotion on the computer. What a blessing it is to see and hear our grandson, Sue and Tim’s son, conduct a devotion at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon (formerly Thiensville), Wisconsin, the very place where his father, Tim, grandfather, Dick, and great-grandfather, Dick’s father, Pastor Richard William Mueller, Sr. studied to preach God’s Word. The message was that we should look at the cross and see what it really means. It is not just something that we look at and forget our sin, or get too comfortable on this earth and forget about our salvation as we await the glory we will have in heaven. We should ponder it. In an e-mail which Dick wrote to Matt, he said, “I gave you my comments in person. I will not repeat them here. You remember them, I am sure. Just know that they were sincerely and heartfeltly given. I would only add here that I would encourage you to continue to do all you do for your Lord and His blood-bought souls in humility. Let Him lead you to where and what He wants you to do.” And as Matt’s brother, Chris, said, “what a blessing to have the technology that allows us to grow in our faith through God’s Word that way.” Thank you, Matt, for the chapel devotion which warmed all of our hearts.

MARCH 24, 2012 – CELEBRATING JENNY AND KEVIN’S 32ND BIRTHDAYS

We were invited to a brunch at Sue and Tim’s home, and what a delicious brunch we had there! We ate in what used to be the family room. The dining room was moved there, and the family room was added to the living room. Both rooms are well suited to the move. There is so much more room in the “now” dining room for their ever-growing family. And the “now” living room has much more room, too. There are two chairs in one corner which kind of has become the “conference corner”. Tim had a very wonderful prayer, and then we devoured the delicious food. There was quiche, cantaloupe and pineapple salad, juices, etc. – and a pecan-caramel birthday coffee-cake which was decorated with candles which Jenny and Kevin blew out. They received many beautiful gifts. Again, I used my digital camera to take pictures. All of us had a great time. Thank you, God, for all of your blessings!

MARCH 25, 2012 – A SECOND BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR JENNY AND KEVIN

We attended the church service at St. Mark’s – Pastor James Werner preaching – and then again went to Sue and Tim’s for another party. The reason was that this time Sue had made delicious golden mushroom soup, pork chops, twice-baked cheesy potatoes, fruit, salad, and a strawberry trifle (this dinner is one of Jenny and Kevin’s favorites) with more candles which they again blew out. It was such a beautiful day that we sat out on the deck. We also played croquet which I don’t think I played since I taught Sue and Tim’s kids how to play (wait, I remember playing it at Sue and Jim’s home in Merrill, Wisconsin, some years ago with their kids, Jim, and his Dad). Now I taught their kids, my great-grandkids, how to set everything up and then play. Their grandmother, Sue, also played. We had a lot of fun. I played croquet with my friends when I was a kid, and loved it.

MARCH 26, 2012 – A CAR TRIP TO JEFFERSON

Tim dropped in at our home after C2 (please see page 333) and brought us some black olives which were left over from the teens’ lunch. My computer had a virus which we didn’t know what to do with, but Tim sat down and deleted it. Later after my stuffed pepper lunch, Dick and I took off for Jefferson. We went to St. John’s cemetery, where Dick’s Mom and Dad were laid to rest, and trimmed around their graves. It was very cold, so we didn’t stay long. Then we went to Twice As Nice, the Lutheran thrift shop. I had seen some roller skates (even with a key) like I used to have when I was a kid, but left them. We had been to Jefferson to find some shoes for Dick at the Walmart there. Our Walmart didn’t have them, but we did find a pair in the right size (9-1/2) for him. Anyway, coming back to the roller skates, they were gone. But we did find a nice pair of pants for Dick for only $2. I think they are of more use than roller skates which I would have gotten purely out of sentimentality.

MARCH 28, 2012 – THANK YOU TO DICK AND OUR DAUGHTER, SUE!

Yesterday Dick and I were out and about doing some errands when the car headed west in Watertown – why? Because my beloved husband knew that I was out of “Buns”, a maple-flavored chocolate candy bar which I love and is kept in stock at Farm & Fleet. That is all we got out there. He bought 18 bars for me, so that should hold me for awhile. Hey, I heard on TV that people do not gain weight by eating chocolate. I am a chocoholic which is better than being some other kind of “holic”, right? Thank you so much, Hon! Oh, that all of you are blessed with such a loving husband (or wife).

Another thing he has worked hard on, and is working hard on, is converting more of his thousands of slide pictures (family, friends, African), which he has taken through the years, to his computer. Our daughter, Susie, worked one whole day to put 3,000 of those slides on Walmart so that they are available for everyone. Thank you so much, Sue! You are a blessing.

LATEST PEBBLES FROM THE ROC ARTICLE

(APRIL-2012) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC (Article by ROC Adult Volunteer Todd Morris) At the ROC, we as volunteers want every teen to feel accepted and be treated in a respectable manner. Each volunteer uses their own personal way to connect with the teens by talking one on one, playing games with them, bringing in treats, or just “hanging out” with them, and showing examples of their faith.
Acts 10:34: Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism.” We should never judge who (you might think) is more deserving of more attention, or the teen we feel has more potential to come to faith, because we should never doubt the strength or the extent of God’s Grace. Unfortunately, sometimes I have to fight my sinful flesh and stop myself from judging which kids have the biggest potential of coming to faith or which teens are the “most deserving” of my attention. This can happen without realizing it. Devron was one of the teens I felt would never amount to anything in life, let alone come to faith. He was constantly getting suspended from Middle School & then High School for disrespecting teachers and fighting with others.
Last Easter Sunday (4/24/11), in the afternoon, I was relaxing at home when my cell phone rang, and I didn’t answer it in time before it went to voicemail. It was a number I didn’t recognize, and no one left a message. I decided to call back to find out who it might be. I didn’t recognize the very deep voice that answered the phone, he then said, “Is this Todd? This is Devron. I just called to tell ya Happy Easter.” I was in complete shock, but somehow gathered my thoughts enough to return the greeting. Since it was past the April 15th (the Wisconsin Electricity/Gas Service disconnection date), I then asked him if his family still had electricity at their rented house, he replied, “We never do now, but at least it’s warm out right now.” After hanging up, I thought about the changes that were occurring in Devron.
Devron has changed his attitude & demeanor in a positive way over the last 2 years. He has become very grateful to the ROC for all the acts of Christian love displayed everyday by Pastor Mueller, the volunteer staff, members of the churches, & other ROC Teens. He always seems amazed how people donate their time, money, & valuable items to the ROC, and they expect nothing in return. Although Devron still has some issues at school, he is devoted to helping out at the ROC whenever he is needed. He is extremely loyal & protective to anyone he eventually trusts. He recently attended a Wednesday evening church service, along with other ROC Teens lead by Pastor Mueller. This is coming from a guy that 3 years ago said, “Religion is a Load of Bull.”
Whenever I see a ROC Teen start turning around their attitude, temperament, & their general view on life, it amazes me how God’s Grace has no boundaries or favorites.

FUTURE 2012 ROC EVENTS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Sun., June 24, 2012, golf at 3 pm – ROC Golf Outing
July 19, 20, 21, 2012 – ROC Rummage Sale

APRIL 8, 2012 – EASTER SUNDAY (RESURRECTION SUNDAY)
“I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES”

What a glorious, happy, blessed day we had! We went to St. Mark’s school Commons where a delicious breakfast was served by the Pioneers. We had a very nice visit with the people who sat at a table with us. When they left, Sue, Tim, and their whole family came and had breakfast, too. After that all of us walked across the street to St. Mark’s church for the Easter service. What a blessing it was to sit with some of our family. All of the others were in our thoughts and prayers. There was beautiful singing by choirs of children and adults accompanied by an orchestra, all giving glory to God, thanking Him for sacrificing His Son, Jesus, to die for us on the cross, and then rising from the dead on Resurrection Sunday (Easter Sunday) which my husband aptly calls it. Pastor Jensen had an inspirational sermon based on John 20:11-18. The theme was: “Mary’s Easter Experience Is Ours!” and the parts were: 1. Death makes us cry. 2. Jesus conquered death. 3. Easter makes us shout for joy.

Bekah, Chris’s wife, sat on one side of me, and Dick on the other. At the end of the service we were so moved that all of us had tears in our eyes. After the service we were elated to be with one of my “old” St. Mark’s schoolmates, Marianne (Kohloff) Smith. She now lives in Ellison Bay, WI, and is making a banner for the OWLS. We know she has had chemotherapy because of breast cancer and have not pushed her. She told us that she is staying a whole week here in Watertown with Becky Manske, her stepdaughter, and they will be working on the banner together. She will be calling us sometime this week. We have a meeting of the OWLS on Sunday, so it would be great if Marianne herself could come to that meeting with the banner she made. She also made some banners which were up today next to St. Mark’s church pillars, beautifying the church.

We were invited to our daughter, Debbie, and her husband’s home in Colgate, Wisconsin, for Resurrection Sunday (Easter Sunday), and were anxiously looking forward to it because we haven’t seen them and their family since around Christmas, but Glen called and said that Debbie is sick and wouldn’t be having relatives and friends at their home as planned. We are disappointed, but pray that Debbie soon will be feeling well again. We had especially looked forward to seeing little Brayden David Wilson, son of Jamie and Mark, because we have seen him only once since he was born, so are again looking forward to that blessing. Get well soon, Debbie!

We were invited to Sue and Tim’s home for a wonderful lunch. Tim grilled his delicious hamburgers and brats, and there were dishes with all kinds of other mouth-watering foods. Sue, Tim, and family always make us feel welcome in their cozy home. We were invited to Joanne and Jerry Brandt’s home on North 2nd Street, Watertown, so we went there to be with Joanne, Jerry, their family, Sue, Tim, and their family. There was plenty of good food including a birthday cake for Jane Birr of Joanne and Jerry’s family, an Easter egg hunt, hitting a piñata by the children which broke open, spilling candy for them to pick up, and lots of visiting, catching up on all the news of both families. Thank you, Joanne and Jerry for your warm hospitality. And, of course, thank you, Sue and Tim for yours.

APRIL 9. 2012 – LITTLE TIMMY’S BIRTHDAY PARTY

Timothy Peter Mueller III was 1 year old on April 9th, but so much was going on yesterday that his birthday party was on the 9th. His father, Timothy Peter Mueller II, called us and invited us to come to Riverside Park to celebrate. The weather was sunny and warm, though a bit windy, so tables were set up near the pavilion. Who would have thought that when I was attending St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran parochial school and they had their school picnics there, that God would arrange it so that where I had run races, my great-grandchildren would be running on that same spot? God works so many miracles. He is the only one who knows our futures. Megan and Tim had gotten delicious Subway sandwiches for everyone. Tim honored Dick by asking him to have the before and after table prayer. Dick was so happy to do it, and did so well. We loved the sub sandwiches. After the meal games were set up and enjoyed. Thank you, Megan, Tim, and Timmy for everything!

While they were doing that, a one-legged female duck flew in followed by two male ducks. The children tried to chase the males away. I went over and picked up the female, being the farm and African girl that I am. Joshua was so interested, so he held her too. He fed her some leftovers from the lunch (cheese crackers) – she was so hungry! Dick, Joshua, and I took her to the river and let her go. She came back with the two males flying after her again. And again we took her to the river, and this time they didn’t come back.

Gifts were opened for little Timmy and many pictures were taken. But then it was time for everyone to leave for their homes. Chris and Bekah left from the park to go back to Eagle River. Holly, Matt, and baby Lilie also left from the park to go back to Brown Deer. Megan, Tim, and little Timmy are leaving tomorrow, the 10th, for Sparta. God be with all of you until we meet again (it reminded Dick and me of the happy and blessed time our whole family had on the island at Riverside Park in honor of our 80th birthdays in September, 2009, and everyone leaving to go back to their homes). We thank God for all of His wondrous blessings!

APRIL 15, 2012 – A BELATED EASTER GET-TOGETHER AND EARLY BIRTHDAY PARTY

Debbie and Glen had invited us for Easter (Resurrection Day) get-together, but because Debbie was sick, it was postponed to be held on the next Sunday, April 15th. We were privileged to go to the church service and communion at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sussex, Wisconsin, with them where they are members. After the service we collected two loaves of bread and some buns which are generously given to the church by a bakery for people who come to the church services. Then we went to Debbie and Glen’s home in Colgate, Wisconsin, where Nicki, David, Cassie, Caleb, Jamie, Mark, Aubrey, Brayden Cathy, Roger (Glen’s brother), and Ken Chmielewski (David’s father) also were. We were so happy to see one another again. We were especially elated to see Brayden whom we had not seen since December 30th, 2011. He was born December 20th. He is such a cutie and a smartie!

The dinner was fantastic and delicious. Glen made his specialty – sweet potatoes – which we love. There were also relishes, cheesy potatoes made by Mark, ham by Debbie, corn, zucchini and 7-layer salads by Cathy, and pumpkin and apple pies made by Debbie and Nicki. I cannot forget the sinfully delicious chocolate birthday cake, complete with candles, for me. We enjoyed everything, and were sent home with wonderful leftovers to enjoy at home.

Also, Debbie and Glen gave me a very meaningful and beautiful birthday card with a most welcome Kohls gift card enclosed. Thank you so much for everything!

APRIL 16, 17, 2012 – CELEBRATION OF MY 82ND BIRTHDAY

Kevin Poston, Jenny’s husband, and father of their four sons and one daughter accepted the Call to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lannon, Wisconsin, as teacher of 3rd and 4th grades and the congregation’s music director, so we called Sue and Tim to talk to them about it. During the course of the conversation they asked if we wanted to go to the Dells with them the next day, Monday the 16th, at 9:00 a.m. They wanted to take us to a winery for wine tasting and also out for a buffet dinner to celebrate my birthday. The dinner was to be ON my birthday, April 17th. We had accepted an invitation to a catered dinner cooked by Augie Magestro (owner of Perkin’s and who has Augie’s Elite Cuisine Cable cooking show on Tuesdays at the City Hall) at Marquardt Village in Watertown. However, we decided to go with Sue and Tim. When we got to Lake Delton, we went to McDonalds to eat, and then we went to Fawn Creek Winery. It is quite a new place 10 miles north of Wisconsin Dells. Tim had seen it advertised on the Internet. There is a very nice gift shop. We tasted some wines which they had created, and they were very good. We checked out Chula Vista Resort – wow! Tim told us that their son, Matt, had worked there one summer for money to pay for his tuition at the Seminary.

When we got back to Pioneer Park, Tim barbecued some cheesy brats for us which were absolutely delicious. They had gotten a video called “The Three Musketeers” which we all enjoyed. After that we went to the trailer which Dick and I had bought July 22, 1982. We had many never-to-be-forgotten happy and memorable times with our families there. It was a good feeling to be sleeping there again.

On Tuesday, my 82nd birthday, all of us packed up. Then Tim drove all of us to Devil’s Lake, south of Baraboo. We had not been there for a long time. It was beautiful! Sue and Tim then took us out for an out-of-this-world buffet dinner – my birthday dinner. They presented me with a very moving and meaningful birthday card. Thank you so very much for everything, Sue and Tim. We headed back to Watertown to get there in time for Joshua Poston’s Spring Serenade. He played the violin beautifully with other musicians, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were happy to get back in time. My 82nd birthday is one I will never forget!

APRIL 21, 2012 – TWO BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS – MOM’S AND STEVE’S

Melody and Steve came around 1:00 P.M. to take Dick and me for a drive to where we didn’t know or what we were going to do. Before we went, they gave me a really loving beautiful card. God has blessed us with wonderful God-loving children, and we are so thankful to Him. They also gave me two “Yankee Candles”, one Sweet Strawberry and the other Lilac Blossoms. Also I was given “Japanese Cherry Blossom” Body Lotion and Shower Gel, and “Wild Berry Tulips” Body Lotion and Shower Gel. I was elated to also receive “The Cabo Coffee Co. Dark Roast Ground Coffee and 3 boxes of “Maria Tepoztlan” chocolates brought for me from Melody and Steve’s Mexican trip. We gave him a birthday gift of a clock which he said he was going to hang in his office at home.

We had such a good time with them. They took us to the Red Lobster in Madison. We had been there awhile back when they took us to see the trains, but the wait was too long, so we left. This time we were early enough so that we had only a 20-minute wait. It was worth it! Dick had Tilapia, and the rest of us had delicious mouth-watering lobster and shrimp. I had lobster way-back-when at the Ridgeway Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia, when we lived in Africa so it was a real treat for me because I love it. I enjoyed it so much. Thank you, Melody and Steve, from the bottom of our hearts for the great birthday celebration. Oh, thank you too for the phone happy birthday song to me – you were great!

Because it is Steve’s 45th birthday on April 24th, we celebrated his birthday too. When we got back to the house, they had to leave right away because they had to get back to baby sit Lacey, one of their grandchildren. They took Steve’s birthday cake, his favorite – a cheesecake – strawberries, and whipped cream along with them to enjoy at home. The cheesecake had a big “45” candle on top of it. It was great being with them.

APRIL 22, 2012 – AN EARLY 54TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR TIM

Sue, Tim, Jenny, Kevin, Joshua, Jonah, Conner, Tyler, Elliana, Julie, Tom, Addie, Holly, Matt, Lilie, and we went to the service at St. Mark’s. Pastor Michael Jensen preached the sermon – “With Jesus the Familiar is Always Meaningful – 1. It’s Comfortable and Comforting. 2. It’s Fresh and Refreshing. We went to dinner at Sue and Tim’s to celebrate Tim’s 54th birthday. Before we ate Tim asked that all of us pray “Come Lord Jesus, Be Our Guest” together. But Dick said that he wanted to conduct the prayer. He said that Tim was born 54 years ago in Lusaka, N. Rhodesia (now Zambia), Africa, and an African lady held him at his Baptism”. Then he asked us all to pray together. Dick is a “Forever Pastor”, just like the “Forever Stamp”. Then we all ate a fabulous dinner. Sue brought out not one, but two birthday cakes, one a rhubarb torte and the other a butterscotch torte – both delicious with a “5” candle and a “4” candle. We gave him a plaque with the words from the Bible in John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”. It is what they say is: “The Gospel in a nutshell.” We also gave him a plaque which we had gotten at the winery which says: “A Fisherman Lives Here With The Catch Of His Life”.

He was also given many other wonderful gifts. Tim is one of our precious gifts from God. When he was born, he actually had a little smile on his face. I am not kidding. When I would make like I was going to tickle him when he was a little older, he would start laughing before my fingers even touched him. We are thankful for him.
